What other parts/devices do I need to install to increase the towing capacity of my Limited?

You can find several threads discussing this if you use the search above, but basically the final axle ratio is changed with the tow package and heavy duty cooling plus (some say the heavy duty cooling is all of them) you get a full size tire (which has nothing to do with tow capacity) but part of the tow package. There is much debate on these other threads saying how much you can tow, but the legal limit according the manual would be 2000 lbs without the factory tow package. I am just curious if the dealer said you could add the tow package as it is from the factory before you purchased the KL.(don't need to answer if you don't want too--just wondering if dealers are giving out that kind of information.)

Thread that will answer many of your questions. http://jeepcherokeeclub.com/4-2014-2...xt-week-4.html

Thanks for the good feedback. I called the parts dept at my Jeep dealer and asked what else I needed to increase tow capacity. They looked up my VIN and told me (argh-not sure I want to risk my Jeep on it) that my Limited V6 already had a oil and transmission cooler, and that would allow me to pull the heavier load since I had the hitch installed at Jeep, but I may need greater support on my suspension. I am not willing to risk ruining my new Jeep trying to pull too heavy of a load. I will stick with the recommended 2000 lbs. Anybody selling a "LitteGuy" or "T@B" trailer? :-)

If you have FWD drive there is no difference in the final drive ratio, if you have 4X4, there is a different final drive. Also there is different GVWR of about 500LBS between non-tow and tow equipped IIRC which is probably heavier duty springs in back to support tongue weight.

" and that would allow me to pull the heavier load since I had the hitch installed at Jeep" Get this in writing and certified from the dealer if you do decide to pull a heavier load than what the Manual says you can do. I know you said your not going too--but just in case you change your mind, protect yourself.

This subject causes tremendous confusion unfortunately. Chrysler has done a very bad job of explaining the specifics, exact details and impact many of the features included in the tow package have on the tow rating. I'm not sure anyone knows exactly what the "heavy duty engine cooling" entails for example, but it's a main aspect of any KL that has the factory tow group. The other thing that seems to matter somewhat, is the drive ratio. If you have the V6 4x4 model, the tow group includes a 3.517 drive ratio, versus a 3.251 ratio for KL's without the tow group. However, the FWD V6 KL's with the tow group seem to have the 3.251 drive ratio, so clearly it's not all about the ratio.

To me, the tranny and engine cooling features included in the tow group package must be what accounts for the 2500lbs of additional towing capacity, and despite what owners of KL's who don't have the tow group believe, they don't have these same cooling features, and thus they're not capable of receiving a 4500lbs tow rating, even with the addition of an aftermarket hitch.

I think Chrysler has been sloppy and inaccurate with respect to the information they've provided about the tow group package.

I agree. It leads some customers to question the integrity of information in build sheets and the web site, especially when some dealers tell customers the dealer-installed trailer hitch increases capacity to 4500 lbs.

BTW, good catch on the Jeep.com 3.2L FWD specs where the final drive ratio does not change whether the trailer tow group is added or not.

...and just to add to the confusion there is "Trailer Sway Control (TSC)" controlled by sensors that recognize an excessively swaying trailer and will take appropriate actions to attempt to stop the sway.
Does this come only with the factory trailer package or is it standard on all Cherokees, who knows ?
