I hate mud. Smells awful. When I was back East this past summer, a friend got his Suburban stuck in mud that looked like that - too an hour of digging to get it out. My shoes still smell like that mud.
Yup...had to get pulled out. I'm a rookie and made the rookie mistake of spinning the tires. That being said it was an easy pull out...like said these tires packed good and full with mud. Then they were slicks. Was fun though and ended the day with these...
In that kind of stuff, which looks very similar to what I got into, the only thing that would have made either of our situations better would have been different tires and better ground clearance.
No doubt, more clearance and offroad specific tires would make a huge difference in the overall capabilities of the KL... but since the OP noted he made "the rookie mistake by spinning the tires", it sounds like maybe he thought he could have avoided getting stuck if he hadn't spun them. He did not state what 4x4 settings he had in place or tried... and maybe nothing would have helped as far as those settings??? Perhaps airing down some and hitting with more speed (like in deep sand) may have helped? I really have no clue.
If none of the built-in 4x4 capabilities of a stock KL (TH) would do any help in this scenario, why would anyone try to drive through 8"+ of heavy mud in one?
I am not trying to be snide here... I am just trying to learn what to do in such scenarios and/or learn what the stock TH is capable of... or not. Personally, I hate getting stuck but realize sometimes it's part of the game.
8" of heavy mud is not a problem... It's the 9" ruts that you get high centered on... I've driven through a pit about a foot deep with thick mud and almost got stuck... The only time you have a problem is when the wheels aren't making contact with the ground because of the ruts.
Getting through mud requires some spinning tires... That's why mud mode turns off the ESC and lets you spin tires. You just gotta make sure you can get the wheels to catch on something to move you along.
I would think sport mode with traction control completely disabled would get into mud slinging mode... Whether or not that would have helped... Is heresy
I went through some pretty deep mud holes the other day , low range , locker/ sand mud mode and plenty of momentum , It flew through ! Looks like the OP had some better ground a bit further on , Maybe more speed would have got him there ? It looks pretty gloopy stuff though .
Yup was some nasty stuff. Two things led to us getting stuck there. A no trespassing sign and a spring fed bog. Stopped to reverse....spun...game over. However the rest of the day the TH was amazing.
haha ya I was, sat the ole girl on the skid plates and wasn't touching anything anymore...needed my buddy's TH to just give me a bit of a tug and it backed right out on its own.
I blame my gf...she told me the first hole didn't look deep (it definitely was) and when we hit the second one just ahead of us in that pic, she screamed because mud started getting into her window and made me stop lol...she doesn't want to own up to the blame for some reason
No kidding! I'm up in Cobalt/Haileybury/New Liskeard, haven't made it to the island yet...Planned a motorcycle trip through there couple years ago but its fallen through every year.
When I hit a deep clayish mud, I put it in 4 low and turned the lockers on and I was able to navigate thru. The mud was hitting the bottom of the TH.
Just remember to clean clean clean. That mud got everywhere in the wheel well and caked up good and ended up tearing an axle boot that needed to be replaced. The dealership said a rock did it.

Valuable information there! (says the other member who had to have an axle replaced due to a torn boot, AND a driveshaft due to bearings being contaminated, AND Idler & Tensioner pulleys being replaced for contamination.) So far....
The KL TH is still a great vehicle, I just avoid deep mud if possible
You shouldn't be getting stuck unless you are getting high centered. Many times you want your wheels to spin, in the mud, to clean your tread and get some momentum.
If you are going to high center, or the mud is just too deep, don't go through it! I've been stuck hundreds of times, but I got old enough to where it wasn't fun to dig myself out anymore.
Be responsible and don't be ripping up any virgin ground! Those ruts take years to recover!
Seeing those pix of KLs stuck in the mud makes me determined to stick to the harder stuff on our off roading trips this summer. Help could be a long time coming in some of the remote areas of British Columbia. - Ted
Turning the steering wheel back and forth would have helped also. so the front tires would clear a better path through the mud.
