Door lock button not working

With the keyless entry, the small back button on the driver (and front passenger) doors are used to lock the car. There is one in the hatch too.

Unfortunately, the button doesn't always seem to work. I will step out of the car (keys in pocket), close the door, then push the button several times before it takes. Each button push, the light on the rearview mirror goes on, but the horn does not sound, and the door does not lock.

The seems to happen every time it rains (of course). The dealer wants to keep it for observation and I didn't want to have to deal with the service issue if there might be something simple causing the problem. Anyone seen these yet?

By chance you are not putting your fingers on the inside of the handle are you? Mine is ubber sensitive and I have had it unlock just touching the edge of the handle.

Good thought - and we have been pretty careful to stay away from the handle.

Possibly the rain is doing the same as your fingers? I know when I wash my Cherokee, the wash water will unlock or flash the lights as if someone had grabbed the handle...

Interesting idea. We'll keep an eye on that, but it happens when it is both wet and dry. The bigger topic is what would prevent the button from activating the lock? We'll try to watch to and see if we can see a connection between the door unlock with the lock button.

If the key fob is too far away from the antenna near the door, the car will ignore the button activation also. If this only happens when wet, then I'm guessing the water is activating the capacitive sensor on the back side of the door handle as others have alluded to in this post.

If the handle is wet, I'd just use the fob to lock the car. No question then that it is locked.

Also the car takes a moment to realize where the fob is. I sometimes try to press the button to fast and it just doesn't think the fob is outside yet.

Mine does the same thing. I never grasp the handle when pushing the button, just use my finger to push it. Sometimes it locks sometimes it doesn't. And it is not raining, or any other weather condition, that may contribute. I will be watching this post for any info anyone can contribute that may help.

I've had similar problems--I've noticed it's worse in the rain just like you. I've also noticed it's worse when I leave too far and come back but if I lock right away it's better. I just assumed it has something to do with range and the time it takes to pick up that I'm there. The OM says 5ft. from the door...that's a gross exaggeration, especially if it's in your pocket and has to pass through YOU to reach the sensor.

Now I either hit the lock button on the inside when I exit or push the handle lock button right after the door closes. Other than that the FOB is fastest.
