Rubicon Trail Questions

I'm heading to Reno from the Bay Area and was wondering if there's an easy way to dip onto the trail for a day. I would likely find a hotel near a trailhead so I could start early, but by the end of the day, I need to be in Reno. Are there parts of the trail you would recommend for this? I'll be in a Trailhawk, winch equipped.

Did you actually try the Rubicon trail?

From my Tahoe experiences, but not off-road

Rubicon isn't near any real "hotels" it's about dead middle, West side of the lake. Truckee is probably your best bet for a hotel as it'd be easier to drive from there to Reno then South Lake. I don't think you can "dip onto the trail", not to mention this sounds also "unprepared". The closest part to Lake Tahoe is in the town of Tahoma. 2+ miles will get you to the trail. First 7ish miles is probably doable in a TH with limited experience. After that you're looking at some work.

All this info I'm getting from the book "Guide to California Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails" page 46 (East Side). I've been on a few of the tails marked "difficult" and I turned around on all 3 due to clearance and lack of personal experience. The first ~7 miles is Moderate which is easily doable in a TH with my current level of experience.

I ended up doing the last 5 miles of the Rubicon last month, as part of another trail that looped around. It was moderate.
