Sheep Bridge, AZ - Sept 2016

So I drove out to Sheep Bridge for a day trip yesterday. It was quite a bit more driving that expected, a little over 7 hours there and back, leaving from Phoenix. About 1/3rd of the distance was freeway/highway speeds, then another 3rd was probably around 35-40mph tops and the last 3rd was probably 1-12mph or so. None of it was super challenging, but I'm new to owning/driving anything other than luxury sports sedans, so it was a pretty new experience for me. I used 4wd low just a couple times down some hills that had a decent amount of rocks and loose gravel. I actually don't know how to rate it accurately, not having much experience.

Enough talk, the rest will be in a few photos. If you prefer an imgur album, click here.

(After previewing, these pics look enormous while embedded, hope that's okay).

Trip Details, mpg was fairly low but probably from the glacial pace with a lot of hills.

It was a bit dusty on most of the road.

Random rock formation on the way (FR 24/Cave Creek Rd)

Cliffs along the way.

One of the easier parts of the road.

Fun with signs

Sheep Bridge over the Verde River

The road out

I didn't take any outside-of-the-vehicle "action" shots because I didn't really think about it/care too much, sorry. Here's a pit-stop shot at the junction of FR24 and FR269.

Looks like a good time. Nice a toasty warm for you?

Did you do any of the little "side challenges".

What's up in the sky over the bridge? Is it a chopper or some kind of kick-ass mutha of a bird?

Yeah it was kinda hot AF down at the river, not a single cloud though it was fairly windy. I don't think I picked any of the side challenges, I must have missed them or something. As mentioned above, this is my first real adventure like this so I don't have anything to compare it to really. It was definitely fun though!

Very cool. Once you start exploring like that, you'll find it hard to stop.

AZ definitely has a ton of trails to try out.

For sure, and I'm looking forward to exploring many of them. Next up is probably Lockett Meadow.

Awesome trip report, looks like it was a lot of fun and a great way to familiarize yourself with your Jeep and a road less traveled. You got some great pics, I have friends/family coming to visit in the next couple months and will probably take them out there.

Once you're comfortable with your line-selection and the feel of the vehicle, if you're looking for something in that 7-hour round-trip range from Phoenix: Schnebly Hill up in Sedona was my first trip in my rig. The views are awesome coming down into Sedona from the top (if you go the route from I-17 one-way to Sedona), though the road has a couple of segments that will demand some concentration depending on your level of off-road comfort/experience.

I've never been up to Lockett Meadow. It's a nice part of the state though.
Make sure to take some pics.

Maybe you can hit Schnebly Hill on you way back down to Phx?

Yeah that's what we're tentatively planning, should be a great return drive at sunset maybe, then hit Sedona and just have highway driving for the rest of the way.

Make sure you get the Jeep - Badge of Honor app on your phone before you do Schnebly. Schnebly is on the list, and if you check in you can get the little "badge" for completing it.
