Video Comparison - Jeep Cherokee vs Subaru Outback

An interesting video comparison from Edmunds.com, pitting the Cherokee against the Outback. Quite apart from comparing two vehicles which are IMHO in slightly different categories, I have some issues with their opinions, but will voice them later, in order not to spoil the video .

You can judge for yourselves in the link below (the video is embedded)!

To each their own.

Comparing a TH to an Outback though? I'm not sure they're targeted to the same audience.

I never even considered an Outback. It's not off-road capable, does not have a locking rear diff, and I do NOT like how it looks. Plus the ones I've been in are slow, sound tinny and ride rough.

Now if they compared a loaded Outback 3.6R Limited vs TH ... then that might be a bit more accurate comparison.

Oh well, like I said to each their own lol.

Outback has a CVT. It's off my next vehicle list. Subaru is also having oil consumption issues.

Seems a fair review. But they didn't talk about all of the extras with the Jeep such as the tech group, skid plates, etc. If only the Jeep had a bigger interior it would win hands down. That is the Cherokee's biggest weakness.

Here is my quick take, with the proviso that I never liked the look of Subarus nor fully understood the Subaru love, and will probably be biased:

Their "Driving experience" and the "Wild card" seems to be a fair assessment but I disagree on both the interior and the value. Unless you absolutely need space, the Outback can't touch the Cherokee interior look or its electronics. The value proposition really depends on what you need and is very much in the eyes of the beholder. I would never want to drive a Subaru or a CVT so, for me, it is an easy choice. BTW, here is the same video posted on Youtube:

I *hate* CVT's. I think all auto Subaru's use it. Granted a CVT might be more reliable than our ZF's but still ... they drive weird.

I really like the look of the Outback and it was a prime contender for me. Don't like the CVT (which we did try out in the Forester) but the 6 cyl. is a regular transmission. Oil consumption problems are only with the 4 cyl. However despite the length matching up with a 2014 Grand Cherokee, length I don't need, the back still would not admit my dog crate. The Cherokee doesn't either. The Outback was surprisingly cheap looking inside. We didn't even drive one, probably should have, but after driving the Cherokee and having a Grand Cherokee for 20 years I think we were a little biased in favour of the Cherokee right from the start.

I checked out both the Trailhawk and the Forester. I did not like the idea of a CVT and the
price on the 6 cylinder Subaru was about the same as we got on the Jeep, plus we have 0% interest on the balance. Sub wanted 4% as I recall. Too, we have 3 Jeep dealers within 25-40 miles of our town, the nearest Sub dealer is almost 60 miles away. Case closed!
