DMV charges overpaid to dealer

I am new to the country and got my new Cherokee registered in Stamford Connecticut. Dealer charged me more than the actual fee and taxes charged by DMV. sales guy told me that DMV would issue a refund and would mail over to me. I would really appreciate if someone could confirm this and do I need to contact DMV OR request for a refund.

Every state is different. For instance, in Colorado you pay some sales tax when you purchase and then you pay a BOAT LOAD of taxes when you go to register (my tags were originally almost $700, but I had a credit from not-yet expired plates).

Anyway, I'd start here -> http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=803&q=569496

If anything, you can give them a call. They probably won't tell you how much if any you'd get, but they would be the best place to start.

How do you know you were overcharged ? The reason I asked is because I almost had a finance guy by the throat because I thought they had figured my tax wrong. Then I found out my state charges sales tax on the $3000 rebate I took. We also pay sales tax on any aftersale products (extended warranty, clear coat protect, ect ect ).

Is that $700 a year or a one time fee? Ours in Alberta is $75 a year.

I kind of doubt that they overpaid your registration fees.
They deal with those things on every transaction they do many times a day.
The dealer tries to make a profit on everything and every sub transaction.
Some dealers will overcharge to make that extra transaction profit.
Most of the time in a large transaction like a vehicle it will not be noticed.
Maybe they will claim its their fee for handling the transfer.
The dealers around here charge a "Doc" fee. Suppose to cover all the paperwork they have to do etc. but is just another profit center for them.
If they overcharged you then they owe you not the State DMV.
That's why I hate car purchases. I usually have to go line by line verifying their numbers like sales tax.
But again everyone makes honest mistakes, even dealers. If so THEY need to make it right by you!

Yearly. Goes down a bit as the car ages. Next year I'm probably looking at closer to $600.

And yet our roads suck. Hmm...

Yeah I am planning to go to DMV in a day or 2 just to cross check if dealer is trying to play with me which is a big possibility because DMV fee was flat $80 + some other charges which come out to be roughly 130$ and I told them that upfront but I was told that we send a flat amount of $399 and any overcharged amout is refunded back by DMV.

I was charged a flat fee for registration that was more then what the DMV charged as well and the amount refunded by the DMV reduced the amount I financed through Chrysler Capital. I assume my dealer finance department took care of that. I just know that my first monthly bill (and all subsequent bills since then) was about $3 less then the papers I signed and that was the reason.

If you did not finance through them then I think you should expect a refund from the Dealer.
