2015 Cherokee Steering locked up

My steering locked! I hunted down this site because my steering failed today. I have a 2015 Trail Hawk 3.2 V6 @ 2800 miles. Its January 8th and 20 degrees here in eastern Pa. I got in the TH this afternoon. I drove about 4 miles from my house and at first the battery light came on the dash. I checked the voltage using the display ( 11.6 volts) itís clearly not charging. I shut everything off to conserve power. Figure I would finish my errants, bank, drug store then home. Left the bank it started right up and off to the drug store a mile away then home. Thatís when it happened. I was making a sharp turn in to the drug storeparking lot going about 1 or 2 miles hour and the steering locked. I managed to not hit anything (I could steer it a little using a lot of force) and found a parking spot and waited for the tow truck. Good thing the engine was running to provide heat.

Anyone else with this issue?

PS: I know its electric steering but felt the need to check the fan belt anyway. It was intact.

have not heard of any others ... be interested to hear what the dealer comes back with. Good that it happened in the parking lot and not on the road.

I'm glad you weren't hurt.

It was about 14 degrees here in Western, PA today... was down to 2 last night... no issues today.

Hope they find the issue.

.
If I'm not mistaken, the Cherokee has an electric power assist steering system.
It sounds to me that due to the continued driving after the warning light came on, the electric assist simply did not have enough electric power to function. You stated that you could steer with a lot of force, so the steering didn't lock up, it just ran out of electric power. A common situation when you continue to drive after the charging system fails to supply power.

Glad to hear that neither you or anybody else was hurt.

This could be a serious safety issue - does this mean that if a battery terminal gets disconnected on the highway I am dead?

I would suspect that a new battery is in order. There have been a few members that have had newer batteries fail soon into ownership.

Not unlike a vehicle with fluid power steering.
When the engine is off and or the power assisted steering goes out it is very hard to steer, period. You may have to be the Hulk, but it is steerable in a emergency.
Basically the slower you go the more force would be needed to steer. On the highway you may not even notice it.
I do remember the pre-power steering days. It was no joy, especially at slow speeds.
Also curious as to the issue.
Good luck and glad you are OK.

I agree with the others. The electric assist is just that, an electric motor. There are no hydraulics involved. You lost the electric assist because the battery was drained but the steering was still functional. It just required a lot more force on your part.

Take it as a learning experience. Next time the battery light comes on, take it to have it checked. Don't continue to drive around like nothing is wrong.

If a battery terminal gets disconnected on the highway god help you no matter what your driving. And in the situation discussed here, just stop driving as soon as possible.
