If I'm not mistaken, the Cherokee has an electric power assist steering system.
It sounds to me that due to the continued driving after the warning light came on, the electric assist simply did not have enough electric power to function. You stated that you could steer with a lot of force, so the steering didn't lock up, it just ran out of electric power. A common situation when you continue to drive after the charging system fails to supply power.
Glad to hear that neither you or anybody else was hurt.
