Cold Start Squeal [video]

Hi Guys,

I apologize in advance for starting another thread on this. I have a video I wanted to share to consolidate the opinions on what this might be, so I started a new thread rather than have it buried in one of the other pages. The ideas are either an idler pulley (apparently there's a TSB) or water pump. This occurs on cold start (<40F) and remains for the first 60 seconds or so. Is this what everyone else is hearing as well? I don't think there was any evidence (video or sound clip) posted in any of the other threads?

I would say this has gotten progressively worse this winter, worst case today so I captured the video. Any feedback would be most appreciated, dealership has a record of not resolving my issues so I like to pinpoint it for them.

Thanks,
Derek

That's exactly the sound I heard, during the extreme cold snap we had here a few weeks ago. I had my idler pulley replaced to remedy it, but it hasn't been cold enough since then for me to hear it again. It was ~5F when I heard it for the first time.

I appreciate the feedback. Were you able to replicate it at the dealer or did you just describe your symptoms? I know if I drive there and it's warmed up it won't do it unless it sits probably overnight

I did not personally replicate it, and I'm not sure if they did either. I described the symptoms and told them there was a TSB. I'm assuming they noticed the problem though, because they did replace the part. I had them check several other TSB related things at the same time and they told me they would have to verify the problem before fixing them; those got fixed too.

Care to elaborate on what else you had addressed with TSBs?

Sure, not to derail your thread, but I had three other TSBs done: the transmission software flashed, the Sirius XM antenna is on order to be replaced, and the steering squeak is being fixed as soon as they get the lubricant.

I figured you might say the steering. Mine's going in today for the third time to address that specific problem. Good luck!

Fan belt needs tightening? Mine does that on some cold days.

-40F? Brrrrr. Haven't seen that here in years. Remember the year we had several as cold as -45C. That's celcius too, where -40F = -40C.

Oh no, thank goodness not -40F, that was supposed to be less than +40F
