Agreed, that's not what they always tell us "operating as designed", unless the battery is indeed dead (which sounds unlikely based on your post). My ESS has always worked since I got it. I have a never-changing light about 1 minute from leaving the garage on my way to work, and it'll usually do it's thing (unless it's bitterly cold or I have climate on full blast).

The voltage sensor is a good hypothesis. I'm sure it's easy enough to try to fix but I'm with @Gersh. Take it in and see what's up.

All the other items that can stop ESS working are not really relevant to the OP as the system tells you why it wont engage and his is telling him its the battery!

I start mine at work after it sitting for 8 hours and drive 500m to the next intersection (with aircon off amd in warmish weather) and ESS kicks in straight away.

Cheers, Dave.

Well, it looks like it did have to do with the battery. On the trip home last night I happened to flip the display over to the ESS status, and it said Ready!. On my commute this morning it did kick in at the right times (took about 2 miles of driving after starting for it to be ready again), and worked well. Based on the discussion so far, i'd say it was likely due to how long the jeep sat on the lot without being driven that caused the big delay. Battery voltage now stays around 14-14.2, and heck, even my gas milage went up significantly this morning (i'm guessing since the alternator isn't trying to condition the battery the whole time.)

Either way, problem solved for now. I'll keep an eye on it if it stops working for any reason, but I'm not going to make a trip to the dealer at this point as long as it keeps working.

Thanks again for the input.

Cheers

Sounds like you might be right. Just hope the battery has some longevity if it has taken this long to bring it up to spec again.

Cheers, Dave.

I usually turn my ESS off but normally after it shuts down the first time as I forget. I hadn't driven my TH for a week or so and I had to drive it about 50 miles or more before the ESS started to work again. I intentionally did that to see how long it would take to get the battery charged up enough for the ESS to operate.

I have the same issue on my 15 Aussie model. Taken it back to the dealer twice and each time they replaced the battery sensor which they say is a common fault. However I still get the battery charging status until I drive for at least 30 minutes. I find if I drive the car every day this trip time is shorted before ess activates. If I leave the car for more than a day It will only ever engage after a long drive. So annoying it's not as seamless but will bring it up again at next service.

Extreme outside temperature (we've guessed around 94F to be the trip point) will disengage ESS.
Battery status of course, if the HVAC fan is blowing full blast for example.
- If you ever get low enough on fuel to get the Low fuel light, ESS will be disengaged. We've discussed this as being weird, especially since ESS is supposed to be a fuel saver, but what can you do... haha.
Have a 2015 Jeep Trailhawk, this problem with battery charging on start and stop is a issue back to the dealer 3 times, they have not clue. Next step to call Jeep hotline. Any one with this issue have it corrected?

You may have an issue. ESS does not take much charging to be operational. I've rarely had mine NOT be available. It wouldn't hard to have it checked out at the dealer.

When I had this problem, it turned out to be a defective battery, but the dealer couldn't (or wouldn't) diagnose it until I had FCA open a star case.

The AGM batteries work a little differently than traditional wet cell types. It's not enough that the voltage checks out.
