Check your transmission temperature when you hear the swirling noise. My fan came on at 203 F when the transmission got to that number and stopped at 197 degrees when it cooled a little bit. My transmission usually stays around 159 to 165 except in stop and go traffic and mainly stopping and then it goes up to that high number. And it did sound like a swirling sound and the fan does sound obnoxious. I always turn off ESS so can't help you there.
