Low oil pressure auto shut off

I took my 2014 Cherokee trail hawk to the dealership for its 30,000 km service. After picking it up and driving approximately 15 km the check engine light lit up and a couple of minutes later the low oil pressure message started to appear intermittantly on the instrument panel. It took me about a minute to find a safe place to park and shut the engine off. The dipstick didn't register any oil and there was oil spilled under the vehicle, which was towed back to the service centre. The problem was found to be a damaged seal at the oil filter and the dealership assured me that the engine is ok because of three reasons: first, I stopped shortly after the low oil pressure message came up; second, the engine retained some oil because the leaking point (oil filter) was at the top of the engine rather than draining from the bottom; and lastly, the vehicle is equipped with an automatic shutdown feature in the event of critically low oil pressure which first slows down the vehicle to 30 kph and then shuts it down to prevent damage to the engine, and I did not reach such stage where my vehicle stopped by itself. I want to confirm that the last two statements are true and sound. Thanks for any insight guys!

The vehicle is equip with a LOM Lie-o-meter for oil pressure, the vehicle has a low pressure switch... oil temp is actual What was the Oil temp at shutdown?

IMO the only way for certainty is OAs... The dealership must agree to pay for 30K miles of service and OAs ( oil analysis ) They must provide free changes BC if you do them they will blame YOU.

We are talking about .001s of wear. Don't back down and be demanding.

Shutdown LOL its way to late by that time serious damage has already occurred.

It does for Me.......

Desoto Do you have and Idea how many feet it takes to destroy Main and rod Bearing W/O lube that are under load?

Here's some pictures of Duramax lifters W/O lube for less then 5 Minutes. The Mains and rod bearings had only .002 of wear BC of the modified sump pump, otherwise this motor would have puke it self to death.

We had to weld steel rods to remove them.

Maybe they are but in the real word maybe not.
Actually I am willing to bet the dealer did not run it and check for leaks after the oil change.
That use to be SOP for all oil changes. I think the issue is with time allowed for a change, they ignore this little issue.
Over tightening the filter cap can cause the housing to crack. That is why it must be to the first click only and so many lbs of pressure tightening.
Also not putting a little oil on the rubber ring can cause an issue of a leak.
My dealer's oil changes were always .4 quart down when I got it back. I figured out finally that .4 was the filter element becoming oil saturated. Obviously they were not checking for leaks by starting the engine. If they had done this they would have rechecked the oil level and topped it off. It does take 6 quarts and they were only using 5.6 qts for the fill.
The lube shop I now go to for my changes, uses 6 quarts to fill because they know that the filter element sucks up .4-.5 qts of oil and that stays in the filter after engine shut off.
Cherokee's oil capacity is 6 quarts with filter.
They also start up and run the engine checking for leaks.
I also noticed that they marked the filter housing and cap with a line up hash mark to avoid over tightening. Never noticed it before.

My only suggestion to you would be to document the issue and talk to the GM in order to get that statement in writing for the future.
There was a problem with the oil change you got in that it was not done properly. The dealer was negligent in that oil change.
The only problem is that any damage probably will not show up for many miles to come. Preventing engine failure and even a little damage is two different things.
I woulds also suggest that there was some wear caused by this happening. So shortened engine life may be a possibility.

For a wild shot I would maybe ask them to add a Max Care Life onto your Cherokee at their expense or maybe 2/3 their expense.
But I would not leave it at a verbal level. Thats what the dealer wants thus eliminating their liability for future engine issues years down the road.

I cannot over overemphasize , that.... today engines are manufactured with extreme tight tolerance's, even seconds W/O lube will cause wear...If you contacted FCA on this matter and disclosed it in detail JEEP would VOID your engine warranty.....

Example we manufacture race motors to spec's of the oil, if the Buyer wants to run SAE50W we go' loose, 20/50W go tighter, These engine's are dyno tested and the entire rotating mass is check dis-assemble and checked for wear, even after the tune is done for X-rated hp we stopped, and at times although rare ...darn good thing we checked.

Your DD motor is produce with the same spec's and tolerances, that's why T&C recommends doing OAs, will set trend, So you know what you have.... OP stand your ground.
