"SVC 4WD" message. Nooooooooooooooo!

So I'm minding my own business driving home, and as I pull away from a stop light - I get the "4wd system not available...." message on my dash, and the svc 4wd light comes on. After reading a bunch of threads here - I'm not feeling very good about the potential prognosis...especially considering I am only two-payments in on my TH.

The dealership in town (where I bought it) said I have to wait until Monday when the 'scheduling guy' is in to figure out an appointment, and that they are running 'about a week out, but might be able to squeeze me in' - it seems that the general consensus in threads here is that I won't necessarily be hurting anything by driving it with the light on?

I have my motorcycle, so I think I might just leave it sit until I can get it in just to be safe.

I am also searching for another close-by dealer that doesn't necessarily require the services of a special person to put me on their calendar...

The Cherokee is FWD by default. So I would drive it unless something in the manual says different. That is unless it resets itself when the vehicle is restarted in the AM.
If it it resets itself it still needs to be looked at.
On the positive side at least its under warranty.

I had the same EVIC error message at 46000 miles. Dealer found codes:
C0051-62 steering wheel position signal error
U0415-00 invalid data received from ABS
Cleared the codes and they haven't come back yet.
Even with the errors I could still get into 4WD low.
The mechanic has no idea what caused the codes.
My TH is a 2014 January build with V6 engine and tow package.

You can drive it with no problems. I had my come on and then go off for about a weak. Came back on later, called the dealer, they said I could get in in 4 days. Got in 4 days later, got a loaner and left it with them. Picked it up a weak later. TH is fwd by default so you can drive it without a problem. The part that breaks is the PTU that delivers power to the rear wheels.

.... The part that breaks is the PTU that delivers power to the rear wheels.
FWIW, American Axle's EcoTrac patent (disconnecting driveline used in the Cherokee) says power goes through the PTU to get to the front differential driving the front wheels, in addition to enabling a gear shift to deliver power to the rear wheels.

Thanks gang - I feel a little better knowing gears aren't going to start falling out of the bottom if I do have to drive it (and that I'll be able to drive it to the dealership).

Interesting part is - about 4 or 5 days ago, I started noticing a small 'clunk' when shifting from park to reverse after it had been sitting for a long time (overnight, more than a few hours). I thought maybe it was always there but I had never noticed it, and figured since the 60k service was getting close, I'd just take it in early and have them check it out. Then the light comes on - I can't help but think they are related...

And survey says....PTU. I should have it back early next week - hopefully that will also remedy the clunk I noticed starting about a week ago when shifting from park to reverse. The upside is that I found a dealership not terribly far away that has been really helpful. Between them and Andrea - I feel much better!
