What oil do you use?

I have the v6 latitude, doing my first oil change today at 5000 miles, which is really pushing it for me. I've always lived by the 3 - 4000 mile rule, never take to shops either. Oil life gauge still says 60%, it'll take time before I end up putting that kind of trust in that technology. I know some people trust it, but that's a whole other topic.

Anyway, just curious what oil everyone uses in their cherokee.

Cheers!

Gosh this has been discussed to death... so here goes my summary :

- V6 = 5W20 only.

- FCA *only recommends* MS-6395 specification oil. It's a recommandation, not obligatory. As long as it is API certified you should be fine. I bring this up because Mobil One, a crowd favorite, does not show MS-6395 (long story), but should be just as good as any other full syn if you choose that one over an MS-6395 specced one.

- 5W20 comes in conventional, semi and full synthetic variations. Any can go into a Pentastar.

- Price : lots of good oils out there. I like the ones on special ;)

Edit : @SS_Syndicate beat me to the Mobil One punch :p

I only have 47xx miles and my oil was almost black. Dash still said 60% oil life, I call bs on that. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm definitely not going off that in the future. Fyi, that's mostly highway and minimal off road.

I've had 2 oil changes done at the dealership and I did the last one at home. All of them done with just under 5% oil life remaining (it nags at this point). I'm following my owner's manual, that's it. Oil was a bit black-er than new, a color I've seen even with a change at 3K miles with other cars, nothing unusual. I've averaged roughly 7500 miles between oil changes (cold climate up here and I do mostly small city/rural road driving).

Whatever the factory put in it, and whatever my Dealer puts in it at my first oil change!
Jeez, I can't detect any OCD here. Shame on you :wink:

With 4,500 miles in 8 months, my oil is still clear (amber) and my oil change indicator has not come on. My Service Writer suggested that I get it changed at 5,000 miles. I'll check the dipstick for color. I am just a little uneasy with all of this auto everything. I have always changed my oil every 3 to 4,000 miles.

If the oil change indicator doesn't come on before I change the oil, will the system know that the oil has been changed? Or, does the tech just reset it?

BY OCD, do you mean Oil Changed Daily?

I use conventional oil, but may one day change to synthetic. I usually have gone with Quaker State. The oil change indicator can be changed back to zero. Both by the dealer when changed there, or by yourself if done at home.

Take a leap of faith, run that oil to 10 or 20% on the monitor. Then order up a test kit from Blackstone Labs. You'll very likely discover that changing it at 60% is a waste of... everything.

As for brand... I'd use whatever major brand synthetic is on sale. Mobil 1, Valvoline Synpower, Pennzoil Ultra or whatever they call it now, etc. Maybe get one that is actually MS-6395 stamped if you want. They're all the same type of group 3 "synthetic", aka super-refined top quality dino oil. Unless you're into expensive group 4 or 5 oils like Amsoil or Redline, brand just isn't going to matter much.

For my first and previous oil change, I decided to just stick with the recommended stuff, and used Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 synthetic. I might consider going with Mobil-1 at some point, especially if there are nice sales going on at Costco, but for now, I'll stick with Pennzoil Plat. for now.

I'm currently at around 5700 miles since my last change, and the indicator is at around 20% or so (lots of city driving this time around), so I'll be changing it probably sometime next month, unless I decide to change it before my trip to the Isle of Man next month. We'll see.

Penzoil Platinum is what I use, because I can buy it on special all year, usually at or below what Mobil One costs (on special). I doubt one is much better than the other, frankly, fanboyism aside, and knowing we don't drive 400K+ miles with one car, usually... For the VW I'll buy Castrol Edge because it is the only one with the recommended VW spec, and I can find it on special all year too.

Once the indicator gets to 10% oil life left, it dips to 5% rather quickly ( like a week or two) and then it nags you on every startup.

Isle of Man ? This Isle of Man ?? :

I get lifetime synthetic oil changes from my Jeep dealer ( up to four a year). I'm not sure what brand it is.

FCA dealerships usually get their oil in bulk, and they get Penzoil only because of the FCA/Shell partnership. All stocked Mopar oil is Penzoil. Smaller dealerships like mine only carry a few conventional oils in bulk, so synthetic is jugs (of Penzoil). Big dealerships have everything (or most everything) in bulk, including Penzoil Platinum (synthetic).

We recently had a member take his new engine and successfully go a full 18,000k miles with no oil change. A testament to the durability of Jeep.
I wouldn't do that, to be honest. In ideal conditions (moderate climate, highway driving at/near legal limits with little stop-and-go, clean air, light engine loads, good gas, etc...) the engine likely won't suffer any damage with synthetic oil for 18K miles. But what about the powertrain warranty vs required maintenance ? What about possible long term effects of wear and tear from doing those 18K miles in less than ideal conditions, with badly degraded oil at the end of the stint ? No thanks... and I really don't see the why anybody would do that, unless you are gathering data for FCA and don't need to care about engine longevity and/or warranty limitations,

I have been doing my oil changes and tire rotations every 3K miles (lots of off-road). Usually takes about 1-2 hours, depending on how the leg is holding up. Pennzoil Platinum, full synthetic, $29.43/5-gal jug. K&N filter, $6.85/ea.

However, my dealer made me an offer for 24 visits, same oil with a MOPAR filter and a 5-tire rotation for $685. That's $28.54/visit or a savings of $192, for the future upgrades fund.

What oil do I use?

Grapeseed for frying (high smoke point), sometimes peanut for the taste (and not-so-bad smoke point).
Olive for anything cold. Canola for baking.

Edit : Oops, wrong thread. Nope, wrong forum :nerd:

Agreed... but I use Pompeian OlivExtra Original for general use... It is an olive and canola oil blend with a high smoke point.
