2017 Break-in

The manual says the following:

"Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable."

But it says nothing about what to do during the FIRST 60 miles. Any thoughts?

The drivetrain on this vehicle is complex, especially the 4x4: i.e. AD1 and up. You will get varying opinions on how careful to be during break-in of the engine and all components down to the tires. I believe in being very diligent during break-in. That includes periodic bursts of full throttle as described in the manual.

To answer your question, I wondered the same, and believe the idea is to keep it on city streets for the first 60. That gives plenty of starts and stops and varying speeds from 0 to 45 mph.

Enjoy your new machine!

Granted this is just my interpretation, but I took the "drive moderately during the first 300 miles," part to include the first 60. I assumed I would drive it very casually at first.

I think so long as you're not brutal with the engine, your basic city driving up to 45 mph is fine, occasionally darting in/out of traffic, but not smashing the throttle or throwing it around the road too much.

Then again, when I picked mine up, it already had 108 miles on it, so I didn't have to think about how it was driven during the first 60. I assume those were mostly test drive miles at relatively low speeds near the dealership, which is fine. In fact, the dealership I took delivery from, when I test drove a different TH with them, made sure I didn't drive it in a crazy way. In their case they probably ensured that the engines weren't abused while new.

FYI. I did not do anything special last August when I purchased mine. It came from another Dealer so it had around 200 miles on it when I took delivery.

When I purchased my 2017 Latitude last month from another city about 85 miles away, there was no way I could keep it at 50 to 55 MPH on the Interstate(really no back roads that would have made sense) coming home. I did vary the speed fairly often but the top speed was more than any 55 mph. After that I drove it according to the suggested speeds on non-Interstate roads up to the 300 miles.
