Talking My New Montrose Custom Aluminum Trailer

Finally, after more than a month and a half of talking about it and waiting, I picked up my custom aluminum utility trailer from Montrose Trailers in MI. The link is http://www.montrosetrailers.com/gallery/utility. In the near future pictures of mine will be up on there as well. Gary Sr. and Gary Jr. are wonderful to deal with. They were patient with me, worked with all of my requirements and were very fair in their price. I highly recommend them.

The trailer is 4 1/2 feet wide, 3 feet high and 6 feet long, inside dimensions. I have attached several pictures for your review as well. Here are a few points to mention:

- Dexter brand 3,500 lb torsion flex axle with Load Range C tires.
- the top can come off should I need to carry something that is tall by removing the shocks and two bolts.
- the ramps store on the underside of the trailer, similar to a car hauler.
- the side shelf supports over 100 lbs and was tested.
- there are drop down leg stabilizers in the rear and have multiple lock positions.
- the lid can be walked on, the fenders can be stood on.
- lifetime warranty on fabrication from Montrose. They stand behind their product.
- I have stood and jumped on the tailgate (while connected to my Jeep of course) and no flexing!
- it was built to haul anything I want, especially one item with 4 casters that weighs over 900 lbs, so it can be rolled up the ramp.
- I do not need tow mirrors as indicated in the pictures, I can see around the trailer just fine.
- it tows like a DREAM. I averaged (hand calculated) 23 MPG empty over 800 or so miles to get the trailer. It weighs in at 900 lbs empty. The same route back I averaged 19 MPG. Speeds both ways was the same, 55-65 MPH.
- I have two neighbors who were truckers for many years. They checked it out today and both said, "that is way overbuilt and looks like a tank".
- Montrose used quality USA made Mac's Tie Down branded aluminum E-track on the walls. For those that do not know Mac's is the leader in vehicle load securing for trailers and I have some of their products.

My price was just over $6,700 bucks. This included the two complete spare tire assemblies. Some say that is a LOT of money. For comparison sake, look at this trailer: http://www.haulmark.com/special-carg...tcargotrailer/ and it sells for over $3,500. The Haulmark trailer is no where near as rugged as the Montrose.

If you are looking for a custom trailer for any need, I highly suggest you talk to Montrose. American aluminum, American workers and they care about their customers. I am satisfied and am happy with my decision.

Agreed! Looks great. Curious, was there a choice to have the framing on the inside? Outside gives you some great attachment options, no doubt.

Edit: Never mind, looked into the gallery a bit more and found some with internal and external framing.

Yes @DZOnline, I could have gone either way. I like the rugged or military look of the framing outside. But more importantly, I have a perfectly square and smooth loading surface inside. I can cube it out with boxes (I move a lot) and prefer that over having the frame inside. My last trailer, a Bravo Star that was 8.5' x 16' and 7' high had the fenders inside and really messed up my load plans. I am a simple guy, I like squares .

Today I changed out the jack. The one that came on it was a single wheel 1,250 lb one. I put a 1,500 lb dual wheel one on. I also put on a handle that attached to the coupler to make it easier to move and hook up.

It made a big difference. And I can re-use the old hitch jack on another trailer, so it was not wasted money.
