OEM Hitch Height

I was wondering if one of you nice owners could tell me how high the bottom of the factory installed hitch is from the ground? Just want to get an idea how much higher the hitch will be on our new High Altitude as compared to our 2006 Pontiac Vibe. We have an Aliner Sportliner trailer and may need a ball mount that has a bit of a drop to it.

It is important to know which drivetrain you have, and wheel/tire size, as this all affects hitch height.

It'll have the 3.2L V6, AD1 & 225/55R18 BSW all-season tires.

Hi there,

I don't have a specific height for you on the factory hitch, but we've discussed this in a few threads, as to which *drop* works best with the OEM receiver. As you know it's installed high. Most here who have trailers seem to use a 5" or 5.5" drop, though some have hinted more drop is needed for some trailers if you want a perfect fit (according to spec). Some use an adjustable drop style ball mount, but they tend to be a bit pricey.
Example : https://www.amazon.ca/Trimax-TRZ8ALR...tch+ball+mount

Not so bad (price) : https://www.amazon.ca/Buyers-Product...tch+ball+mount

This Cherokee's hitch does sit higher than my previous Jeeps. Coming from a Grand Cherokee SE, my Cherokee required a new drop. I required a 3 1/4 drop on my boat trailer, with 13" Tires. That as compared to no real drop on the Grand Cherokee with the same trailer. My utility trailer with 12" tires requires a 8" drop, though 10 would work better. I just load it heaver with the 8" drop in the front, to level the trailer. I still balance it though.

Actually there are on-line calculators like at e-trailer, I believe, that will show you how to calculate the drop for that particular trailer. You have to measure the bottom of the hitch receiver to the top of the ball coupler on the trailer,I believe. When your drop/rise takes up or adds to that difference you will have a level trailer.
The important take away point is you want that trailer level once its hooked up, especially when and if its loaded. Every trailer is different even with the same tires. Measuring is the only way.
Yes, I have two drops with balls. I really do not like the adjustable ones. But again that is just a matter of preference.
Good luck

Thanks for the info, everyone. Our tent trailer will be the main thing we tow, but since it weighs less than 1000lbs, has a tongue weight less than 180lbs, and uses a 1 7/8" ball, I was hoping to avoid an adjustable hitch to keep things simple for it.

I'm sure, though, we'll get an adjustable hitch with a 2" ball due to all the options that it will afford us thanks to the towing capacity of this Jeep. I'm sure we'll be renting a trailer and hitting some IKEA sales once in a while, or getting our own lumbar at Lowes.

because of the height of my hitch, along with the HazzardSky lift, I needed a 9 1/2" drop to tow my 5' x 10' utility trailer, and I could probably stand for another 1/2" to 1" drop at that. but as a previous member said, once I load it up, the tongue weight of the trailer levels itself out.

I measured and got 20" from the bottom to the ground. That is with the 18" wheel package.
