2017 Cherokee Trailhawk Flat Tow Question

I just purchased a 2017 Cherokee Trailhawk with the two factory red tow hooks. Problem is that I can't find the right tow bar that connects into these red tow hooks. I asked the dealer and they referred me to the RV dealer. The RV dealer had no idea what mated to those red hooks.

I did see the identical Jeep at an RV park with the red hooks. If I had known ot was going to be so frustrating to find the right tow bar, I would have stopped and looked at what he was using.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Hey Paul, welcome to the forum!

Those Trailhawk hooks are not designed for flat towing. That's why the RV dealer could not relate. Base plates are made for the Trailhawk and all of them I've seen require the red hooks to be permanently removed.

Maybe the Trailhawk you saw at the RV park was visiting and not being flat towed.

BTW, if you find new information about the hooks and flat towing, please let us know. There is plenty of knowledge shared on this forum and we always appreciate new information. In addition if you are looking for more details, there are plenty of Cherokee owners here that flat tow and will be happy to help.

- The TH's red hooks are intended for recovery operations (pulling), not long term recreational flat towing. Further the hooks are designed to collapse to the side in a front end collision. If they were used for flat towing, there is a chance they would collapse during an emergency stop.

- Jeep designed the KL models with AD2 or ADL drivelines for flat towing. As you know, one of the features is the ability to put the AD2 and ADL drivelines in Neutral Mode. Another thing Jeep did was to provide a mounting flange on each side of the front end for bolting on base plates for flat towing. The TH uses these flanges as one of its mount points for the red tow hooks. Consequently they must be removed to install the base plates.

- Two well known manufacturers of base plates for the Cherokee are Roadmaster (http://www.roadmasterinc.com/pdfinst/521446-5.pdf) and Blue Ox (http://blueox.com/wp-content/uploads...1/BX1136-5.pdf).

- You will need to buy a flat tow electrical harness from the dealer and have it installed. It enables the shimmy mitigation system to be powered up during towing even though the ignition is turned off. (http://www.wk2jeeps.com/Misc/Cheroke..._08_010_17.pdf)

A third manufacturer of towing baseplates, towbars and other towing products is Demco. They manufacturer baseplates in both fixed and removable tab models.. http://www.demco-products.com/rv-towing/baseplates1/.

I've installed baseplates from all three manufacturers on the various vehicles I have towed in the past. All have been good quality with clear instructions.

If you intend to have an RV dealer or Jeep dealer install the towing equipment for your Cherokee, steer clear of any who cannot give you good references to other baseplate installations they've done.

Good luck and do not hesitate to ask questions here. There are many who will be helpful.

So you are correct. I had to remove the hooks and install base plates with removable posts. I used the roadmaster EZ5 plates since they do not require cutting the bumper mount flanges or the grill hole plastic. The blue ox version requires both invasive steps.
