Import American KL to Europe

Hi everyone.

I am an American who currently owns a 2016 KL Trailhawk. I've been thinking about making the move to Germany within the next year and stumbled upon the possibility of importing my car, avoiding among other things the ridiculous VAT and having to purchase a car abroad. I've read that people on here have done it, but haven't read about all the details, other than there are emissions tests, inspections, etc. that need to be completed before the vehicle can be registered. Does anyone have any advice about this process and how cost-effective it is compared to buying a KL in Europe? Thanks in advance!

I believe I've read about a few members doing it, but I also think they were military and that rules are different for them.

I hope you are able to do it without too much fuss. Hopefully some non military have done it and will chime in.

Best of luck !

You may need to do some technical update especially if your is a TH removing the points for recover.
You must contact before with the inspection control at Germany and ask them, contact with a special center for homologation car tunning they will let you know what things you need to change. Here you will need technical certification from mechanicals, tuv... In all the changes you want.

This give you an idea. There are some other threads here about this.

If you want you also can take a look to the prices at Germany for new cars. The only gas version it's the TH, all others are Diesel versions.

Well, if you are not able to get US military license plates, the car has to meet some European standards before they give you a German registration. For sure, some technical modifications are needed, like headlights. The good thing is, all needed parts will be available here from the European version. We also have some company's here, which are specialized to convert US cars.

Another point is the uconnect system, which will work limited her in Europe. If you decide to ship your car to Germany, we can talk about details.

It can be done, but it's likely you'll need new headlights, the tow hooks will have to come off, rear fog lights added, uconnect won't function properly as I THINK the radio stations run on a slightly different frequency, the GPS MAY be able to be updated. Otherwise you should be okay. If you are military that's the easiest.

Oh and I think gas "petrol" is considerably more expensive.
