TMC (Traffic Message Channel)

How To Use TMC in Uconnect

The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for members to describe how TMC actually works in Uconnect. Members that use TMC a lot and experiment in congested areas will probably be able to contribute the most. My (this) post will cover what I’ve found so far. For those that don't want to read this whole post, here is a description from someone that uses it; BlckWK2 from Metro Detroit posted this on Jeep Forum in February 2015:

You can adjust how the traffic will be alerted/routed when an incident occurs. It is in the NAVIGATION MAIN MENU --> SETTINGS --> MAP GUIDANCE --> TMC ROUTE -->

Options include:

– Automatic: No black pop up window, reroutes automatically
– By Delay Time: Setup specific delay time on main route. If set at 5 min, your route is rerouted if traffic issues cause more than a 5 min delay (automatically)
– Manual: Black pop up window and lets user decide what to do
– Off: No rerouting due to traffic incidents

I have a long commute to work and mainly highway through the Metro Detroit area. Lots of different traffic issues so I use my NAV a lot! I usually keep it on automatic. If you do this make sure you have the navigation guidance volume turned on. There were plenty times where I have the guidance volume off and totally don't see the new route if it automatically changed.

What is TMC?

Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is a technology for delivering traffic and travel information to motor vehicle drivers. It is digitally coded and carried via conventional FM radio broadcasts, transmitted on Digital Audio Broadcasting, or satellite radio. In the United States of America, XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio provide TMC service all over the US. Navteq provides traffic data to both providers. Sources of traffic information typically include police, traffic control centers, camera systems, traffic speed detectors, floating car data, winter driving reports and roadwork reports.

Each traffic incident is encoded and sent as a TMC message. Each message consists of an event code, location code, expected incident duration, affected extent and other details. The message contains a list of up to 2048 event phrases that can be translated by the receiver into the user's language. Some phrases describe individual situations such as a crash, while others cover combinations of events such as construction causing long delays.

Uconnect Help – No Help

The Uconnect manual does not describe how TMC settings affect routing, other than what can be derived from the option names such as: Automatic, By Delay Time, Manual, and Off. Called Uconnect and they said to call Sirius XM. Called Sirius XM and they said to call Uconnect because all that SXM does is transmit the data provided by Navteq. Sent an email to Uconnect and in it also asked if there was a contact at Garmin I could communicate with since Garmin provides the navigation routing software used in Uconnect. Uconnect refused to provide any further information other than repeating to call SXM or talk to the dealer.

One more thing about TMC on uConnect, but I don't know, if it's relevant for USA/Kanada.

UConnect only supports free basic TMC. Here in Europe, we also have a more reliable and faster TMCpro service, which is likely standard on most European cars with GPS-Navigation. TMCpro is not free, GPS/Nav manufacturers have to buy a license for every single unit they make. But, as I said, uConnect does not support TMCpro.

@Array, My impression of TMC in the 8.4AN is that it uses the SiriusXM NavTraffic information as "TMC" rather than the FM data channel. Does the 8.4a have such a feature?

Must have missed the notification you posted to this thread in May. I was probably on the road at the time.

I believe your impression is correct from what I've read and heard. When I called SiriusXM, they said they get the traffic data from Navteq and SiriusXM broadcasts it across the US.

According to the user manual, one of the distinguishing features between the 8.4AN and the 8.4A is traffic data.

The 8.4AN sets itself apart by offering these unique
features:
• HD Radio
• Navigation Standard
• One-shot destination entry
• 3D content (Select this option and zoom to an appropriate
level. Not all “tall” buildings are in 3D)
• Enhanced Digital Terrain Model (DTM)
• SiriusXM Traffic
• SiriusXM Travel Link

Thumbs down Totally Useless for Canadians

I have a Garmin Nuvi that I bought for about $100.00. It has some great features that include traffic avoidance. This feature suggests alternate routes if there are traffic or construction issues on my planned route. This feature was just part of the package.

Enter my 8.4 Garmin Uconnect Nav that I paid almost $700.00 for. You would think that since the $100.00 Garmin has the traffic avoidances as part of the product, something that you pay $700.00 for would have it as well.

If that is what you think, especially if you live in Canada, you are mistaken. In order to get the traffic avoidance feature working on your 8.4 Garmin Uconnect, you need a Sirius XM subscription. This subscription somehow allows you to recieve traffic and weather reports so that you can plan your route accordingly . . . but only in the US.

Who the heck though of this brilliant plan? Why not include the traffic avoidance feature in with the Garmin?

Is this a hard thing for the folks at MOPAR to make happen?

I for one am dissapointed that I paid so much for so little.
