Front Door Speaker Install and Upgrade

2014 Jeep Cherokee Limited standard audio system wit nav unit (8.4AN)

My install for front door speakers, and the disconnect of the front A pillar speakers. Sound staging was good enough with the Focal's alone, the extra 3.5" in the front were too harsh and shreiking. Disconnecting them really sound amazing, try for yourself after the front door install see how you like it.

I will not be placing speakers in the rear since the rear stock speakers provide a lot of bass, its almost like having mid-bass speakers. Which is a very good set-up.

Next week weather permitting I will be installing a 4 channel amplifier instead of the planned 5 channel. I will amp the front speakers and bridge the other 2 for the subwoofer. Guide, pics and tips to follow.

Parts Used:
Pair of Focal 6.5" CA1
Metra 82-6901 6x9 adapters (turned out useless, with some work you could make it fit but I found wood template was better)
Hushmat 10151 Sound Dampening 4 sq ft (used as a baffle not on the door skin since the door skin was behind the door electrical panel and not worth the hassle of disconnecting everything)

Instead of the metra brackets I went with 1/4" MDF wood and cut it to size.
However as mentioned by a few other people now that the mounting depth isn't as small as originally thought we can probably use a lot of 6x9's on the market.

Front Mounting Depth is 3.25" (with the exception of that plastic "stick" it can be cut, see guide for more details)

I assume the rear mounting depth to be the same since it's in a plastic speaker basket and I dont see why it would change since there is no extra bulk on the rear doors)

(Follow this guide at your own risk, I take no responsibility for any mishaps)

I do have a question regarding uconnect. i purchased the 8.4a nav ready system. I purchased the nav separately. If i upgrade the system, will it reset the uconnect to factory settings and take out my nav?

also, i prefer not to have a sub since it takes up space. can you recommend a good set of components that have a good amount of mid bass. i was thinking of cdt's or focals but RE xxx is pretty much wallet friendly but i don't know about quality... i just fell in love with their subwoofer line years ago. the factory is pretty nice but i could use more without the need of a sub.

Thanks for the great write-up zml! May I ask if you have the 6 speaker system or the upgraded system?

Thanks for the info. Can you still hear the Uconnect voice command responses after disconnecting the dash speakers? I have nav and I've noticed some statements (like the speed limit warning) seem to only come from the driver's side dash speaker.

Any info yet on your sub and amp?

the red circle in the picture noted as "a stick" that he mentions to dremel off, is actually the window track bolt. It bolts in from the backside, and it not easily cut-able or removealbe.
to remove it you would have to remove the entire black portion of the door, which will be a nightmare, for it is siliconed in and holds your window regulator.

OR.
cut the back of the speaker housing. The housing, is used to support your window track, so it is HIGHLY NOT recommended to cut it out, unless you have a way to re-support your window track.
FYI,. twisting windows due to lack of support is bad. very bad, for the window could shatter or the motor will burn out in a shorter period of time.

I had some thoughts about that STICK when he said to cut it out. Those things are there for a reason so not a good idea to cut things out unless you know the purpose for sure ... Otherwise very good information on the speaker install.

Would this be the same for a 2015 cherokee sport and second, is an aftermarket amp needed? If so is an loc needed as well with the uconnect5? I don't have the upgraded system but I want better sound...
