Took a drive up past Duncan to find a way in to Sherk Lake, NorthEast of Youbou.
I got farther than last time but was eventually stopped dead by a trench carved by runoff across the track. Still, getting there was a good test of the Sport 4 x 4 abilities. Lots of steep hills, mud holes, rocks, washouts and enormous puddles on the way after the wettest winter on record in our neighbourhood.

The place has been ripped apart by other vehicles and the trench that stopped me also took a toll on the bottoms of everyone else's vehicles judging by the plower up dirt where everyone bottomed out. I don't know whether the 1 3/8" additional clearance from myfirstcherokee's lift kit would have made any difference in this case, but I find the limits of how far I can go, have everything to do with clearance, and nothing to do with the abilities of the 4 x 4 system on the Sport.

That is, the 4 x 4 system was flawless. and to be honest, I probably could have done the trench on an angle but there was a 24" deep stream on one side of the road and a steep drop off into the valley on the other side and with no spotters to guide me through, I just didn't want to risk it.

Man that looks like a fun road! You'd probably surprise yourself in how far you can go, just need to find a few other people/vehicles to go out with, just in case.

Yeah, it was kind of in the way.

I'm not sure whether the truck started the brush fire or whether it was just caught up in it but it's a mess up there. No wonder it's harder and harder to gain access to service and logging roads on the island. So much garbage everywhere you go.

Great report. Makes me almost wish we still lived on Gabriola Island. Nowadays the return ferry fare from the mainland requires a bank loan before we can make a trip to Vancouver Island. - Ted
