I totaled a GMC Z71 years ago and I couldnt even take the spare tire. If it gets totaled the insurance company sells it to a salvage yard which then parts it out. (from my understanding) I highly doubt you can lay claim to the 8.4an. Your brother in law will be able to retrieve personal belongings.

According to the pic alone, I do not believe this will be totaled unless the frame got bent.

If they do decide to fix make sure your BIL makes them replace all 4 tires not just the one.

I would have my insurance company involved. Typically they would do the estimates and setup the repairs and then go after the other insurance company for the damages. I would not trust the other insurance company as they don't have your interests in mind and will low ball everything and likely require it to be repaired at whatever low cost place they can find.

If the 8.4N nav was added after the purchase then you should be able to get it as it was an after sale item if it was part of the original sale then it is the salvage yards as he keeps any personal property in the vehicle if you had after market wheels then you would be able to keep then if you provide the original rims. Gets a bit sticky they may require recipes of the parts. You note said that he was hit on the passenger side but the pics show damage to the driver side?

It's up to his insurance company to deal with theirs. He pays his monthly premium for them to do their job. Get him involved with his insurer.

@Pondhopper. yes it was the drivers side. thanks for the correction. Regarding the 8.4an ... it came from factory.

Looking at the pics, I would not call it a total at all....if the front drivers door opens then the damage did not bend the frame to collapse the cage. Doesn't mean it's not bent though. Fender and hood and grill, etc are chump change in the repair world. Front engine compartment sheet metal and radiator supports and interior fenders, etc can be welded back in by any good shop.

Not until I saw the pic of the Jeep on the tow bed did i get concerned...can't tell if the wheel hub is ripped off the axle shaft or axle separated at the CV...either way, that's a lot of torque on the trans and needs to be checked to see if inside shaft pulled out or internals yanked/bent.

A shop could put a new front clip, engine and trans in and you wouldn't know it if they were good...

Glad no one was hurt and good luck...his insurance should do all the work.

Would agree that it doesn't look totalled. Just make sure it goes to a reputable body shop. They're hard to find lol.

But otherwise, glad he's OK.

I was a good kid, now I'm making up for it....

If they dont total it and repair it, ensure that they will cover any warrantys for anything that may come up due to the repairs later on down the road. I would hate for your dealer to not cover any factory warranties anymore or for something to come up down the road due to a shotty repair.

Make sure whoever does the repairs you tell them you want GENUINE JEEP FACTORY parts installed NOT aftermarket replacement parts.
There can be issues with fitment and quality of aftermarket replacements and you have a right to have it repaired with genuine factory parts at no extra charge.

Doesn't look totaled to me.
