heater not maintaining temp (my story so far)

hey gang. having issues with the AC heater in my latitude.

whats been happening:
cold outside (55 degrees or colder)
set cabin temperature to something warm (~73-77 degrees)
warm air pumps out appropriately for ~20 minutes
then it switches to cool and/or cold air, sometimes oscillating between the two
the cabin temperature drops noticeably
seems as if the AC tries to regulate at the set temp, but overshoots to cold
turning the fan higher doesn't help
using the auto feature doesn't help
wont switch back to warm air unless temp set absurdly high (82+ degrees)

troubleshooting:
brought it to dealer, demonstrated issue
service advisor said it might be a bad actuator
they updated software for two systems (PCM and IPC), told me to drive
no change, problem persists
opened star case, brought back to dealer
dealer techs spoke with star techs, said the AC Control Head needs replacing
AC Control Head is on national backorder

that's it so far. will update when i have more news.

Others have posted about having the same issue. At least you didn't get an 'operating as intended' as someone else did.

Yep, seems to be accurate. One of the guys I work with has a '14 Latitude and has been waiting for the same part. What model year is yours?

LOL. i intentionally left out all the dealership drama from the initial post, but that did, in fact, happen to me too. the short story is that i demonstrated the issue to the service advisor (who is professional and knowledgeable), who concurred there was something wrong and they should troubleshoot it. he even suggested the issue might be the actuator. when i asked for a rental car, he suggested i call Chrysler directly since the dealer doesn't issue rentals. while on the phone with Chrysler, the CSR put me on hold to talk to the dealership to see what had been done so far and to confirm they were, in fact, troubleshooting my vehicle. he spoke with the service manager (note: not the service advisor who had looked at my vehicle and confirmed the problem), who told the Chrysler CSR the following:

"Yeah, it didn't throw any error codes, so no work was done. My wife's car does that too, so apparently that's normal for Chrysler AC units." (paraphrased wording, but he absolutely mentioned "no error codes," "wife's car does the same thing" and "nothing we can do.")

as such, the Chrysler CSR said he had to go with the word of the dealership spokesperson who said "there was nothing they could do" (in spite of the fact that the service advisor *specifically* told me to leave my jeep there for testing, and concurred that there was a problem), and could not issue me a rental. i spent the next 20 minutes attempting to convince the Chrysler CSR that the dealership service manager was either ill-informed or a liar. it was only because of my tenacity that it was turned into a Star Case, and the Star Case Manager 100% concurred with me, agreed that the problem was a problem, and gave me a $35/day limit reimbursement for a rental.

so... yeah. :/

Hopefully you will not have to wait much longer for the part. Just had lunch with my buddy who owns the Latitude, and coincidentally the dealer called him this morning. The part arrived and he has an appointment for the week after next to have the repair completed. He had been waiting for the part for a bit less than a month. According to the dealer a certain percentage of these eventually fail; it's not associated with a particular model year or build date.

Watching. Thanks for posting your details. Having same issue in my 2015 Limited. Down in Florida at this time so diagnosis may be a challenge. Interested in how this turns out for you.

yeah, living in Georgia (cold today, hot tomorrow) that was a big concern of mine as well. since my commute is ~40minutes and the problem seems to only manifest after 20 minutes or so, i waited for a day when the jeep was very obviously having the issue. when that happened, i drove directly to the dealership, kept the engine running, and told the service advisor to check it out, so at the very least they could see the problem manifest and confirm that it is a legit concern. assuming the vehicle is under warranty, it seems like getting past the "could not duplicate issue" / "working as intended" hurdle at the dealership is the biggest obstacle we face. once they admit there's an issue, troubleshooting should be their concern.

will definitely update when the part comes in.

I get a similar issue but more around the heat than AC.

After driving for a bit in sub zero weather and the jeep is fully warmed up I cannot get the jeep to blow warm/cool air unless I put the temp in LO mode. If I set it anywhere above that it's blowing super hot air to where I need to open up some windows to even it out.

It hasn't annoyed me enough to bring it to the dealer but anyone else get the same issue?

i haven't experienced that, but it seems like it could be a symptom of the same problem (if it's the actuator).
