30 mpg

Just returned from a 2808 mile round tripper taking mother to Sedona, AZ and Cherri performed like a champ. Ran the I-90 to I-15 then south thru Utah to the 89 to the 17 and into Sedona. Met my brother there and he chauffeured us around in his Q5 most of the week. On the return trip we came the same route til Blackfoot ID then headed NW to Arco and up 93 to Missoula then the 90 back to Spokane. Mostly hiway miles running 65-80 mph, cruise control engaged whenever safe, I saw 9th many times some longer than others.

After 14 months I can pretty much tell by the tach what old ZF is up to. On the way down I tried to outsmart it and hit the go button to get it back into 8 after I thought the upshift to 7 lasted too long for the road conditions. Got 28.7 not sure that was the reason for this number or not. Cruising 1750 to 2K I saw 31-32 on occasions. She still gets out of sorts on a long down grade with the cruise control engaged once it passes the mph set. Usually just disengage it and things settle down. All in all very pleased with the performance of this Latitude.

Thanks for the report.

Take the mountains out of the equation and your mileage would have been in the low 30's overall I am sure. On the flat Interstates of Illinois I can run 32-33 with no problem. I have been as high as 34 on my normal 300 mile trips to the big city using the ACC.

Now my only question to you is how and what conditions did your Cherokee use 9th on its own? I can force it on mine doing 74 mph on a slight decline with my foot off the gas only.

Your MPG numbers are great and really show what this V6 can deliver with the ZF 9 speed..
You are correct in that you can tell a lot by watching the RPMs as to the shift.

Also the use of 8th has everything to do with those over 30 mpg numbers in my opinion. Staying in 7th I doubt you would ever see 30+.

I have the V-6 with ADII and the tow package, and when I don't have a heavy right foot can see about 28MPG on the highway. I completely agree with you on the long downhill sections and cruise control. When the mph is about 6-7 mph over the setting you get abrupt downshifts and very high rpm's. They should have a better algorithm to prevent this from happening. I either turn off the cruise on long down hills, or put it in sport mode (this seems to prevent the problem).

Interesting to note all 3 of you have factory tow and can get 30mpgs (give or take a few).

just a matter of time. That's great! If you want an extra 4.5 mpg and 2wd, then for a few $ 2 u we could trade. OK?

Can't speak for the OP, but on my V6, when you go down a long grade using CC you can feel the transmission hunting for the right gear. It doesn't seem to know what to do when the speed goes up but the amount of work on the engine goes down. Taking it out of cruise on those long grades usually solves the problem.

Also thinking the go button, is the skinny one on the right side by your feet.

Nice. For me with the V6, it was about 27.8 as my best gas mileage.

@Jeepster1 usually down grades and most always over 75 but there were a few sections like driving around the Vermillion Cliffs were 9 was maintained for longer periods. Did use the throttle/back off method a couple times on the way down but let the computer have control on the return trip and still saw 9. I agree with the sans mountains. We saw several 7000+ and one 8000' passes on the trip.
@Kevin C, exactly what I experienced and never thought to drop into sport mode. Will try this on me next trip!

Sorry @newrollo so far this KL has been a joy and I think I'll keep her.
@rumrunner the go button is the throttle and Kevin C and coloradotrv both described the ZF performance to a Tee.

Two observations, since me mechanicing days were all on analog rigs I'm not up to snuff on all the electronics, going by the seat of me pants. If the ZF could handle it, another 30-50 ft lbs or torque might make 9 more usable and eliminate some of the 7-8 up and down shifting. The fly by wire throttle could use a better algorithm/programming as at times it feels like the tranny isn't sure how to accept the input from it. Anyway potatoes patato, still love strapping in and taking her on a road trip. Be well jeepsters.
