The Quadradrive II, until the current version, had locking front & rear electronic locking differentials. Called officially electronic limited slip differentials (ELSD). It's transparent to the user and non-selectable.

I was skeptical at first, but it works great!

After 2011 only the rear ELSD is offered. The take over of the mall crawler is nearly done...

I was confused at first, because I knew that a limited slip differential was not a locking differential, so I looked up more about the QDII, and then found that in the clutch packs of the center and front/rear differentials, the system will variably adjust the amount of slip or lock without the driver's input, and that it will allow a total lock if the system requires it.

Definitely a unique type of AWD system, I must say.

Seems to me that this would be the ideal setup for the TH. A two speed transfer case could be added to the front: thus, FWD would be eliminated. The TH would become RWD! Also, the 2-speed rear differential would be single speed to match the ratio in the transfer case. Front and rear could have an electric lock over ride, controlled by the driver. Probably the bean counters would not consider this!

Going off of that, considering a lot of the 4WD system is controlled via computers, I wonder if it would be possible to hack/flash the ECU of the KL, and essentially turn the car into a RWD car by default. Currently, the car primarily drives as a FWD vehicle until it senses slippage of the wheels, and then engages 4WD mode (when in auto mode). So I wonder if it would be possible to reverse the wheels being powered, and instead make it RWD by default instead of FWD. And maybe even adding an option so even when in Sport mode, you can opt for a RWD 2WD mode instead of 4WD permanently engaged.

Thinking about it more though, I wonder if that is even mechanically possible given how the whole drivetrain is setup with the transversely mounted engine with the transmission itself connected to the front axles. But it is also unusual for a car such as this to even have a 2-speed transfer case, given it is a transverse engine. On the same token, however, it is possible to send 100% of the torque to the rear wheels, so perhaps it could be done.

I wouldn't say it was unique. That's exactly how my 2002 Subaru Forester worked. Except that I wired an over ride switch so I could lock the centre clutch manually if I desired.

Little bit of a thread jack but since we're talking about it... I didn't realize they were "lockers" either since the ELSD by name says "Limited Slip Differential" and there's no switch or button that says "Diff Lock" in the cockpit.

I found out quite by accident when my Commander was rock climbing and hill climbing without slipping a tire where the FJ Cruisers and Rubicons were spinning their 35s left and right. Logged back onto the Jeep Commander forum and started reading all the search results for Quadradrive II.

Though I love the diesel WKIIs, I won't take a step back and with the post 2011 Quadradrive systems. No front ELSDs.

Nope there are no buttons for ELSD. But they do lock. At least speaking of the WK2.

One more thread hijack, before I settled on my TH, I had brought up the idea of buying my Mom's 2007 GC Limited 3.0CRD, as I knew she was going to be looking for a new vehicle in the near future. In the end, the timing for it all was not to be, so that's when I searched high and low for the right KL TH. That 2007 would definitely have the the QDII that you're talking about, with ELSDs on both front and rear, including the lockers you speak of. I've driven her GC quite a few times, whether it was to go visit my late grandmother, or allowing me to drive it for work just to see how it handled. Needless to say, and it does go without saying, overtaking is awesome with that CRD, and one of the only real nitpicky things I have against the KL's right now.
