Active Drive II includes all of the features of Active Drive I but adds a low gear range. When in "4-Low" mode the front and rear axles are locked together and power is sent to all four-wheels through a 2.92:1 gear reduction in the power transfer unit; providing a crawl ratio of 56:1 for four cylinder Jeep Cherokees and a 47.8:1 crawl ratio for six-cylinder Cherokees. All Cherokees with this system have a raised ride height of one inch.

ADII also includes Hill Descent Control and Neutral for flat towing in addition to 4 Low.

OP, the one you are looking at that has 4 sections is the Trailhawks AD Locker, which along with the ADII systems has a Rear Locker selection and Selec Speed Control

AD Lock on the trailhawk is, yes. The ADII should be fine as well off road. The Low range adds that needed low end power if you get stuck or are pulling something like a boat out of the water.

ADI should also do just fine off road; it just has some limitations in regards to how hairy the situation can get.

ADI is still going to out perform most other Active/Real Time AWD/4WD systems you would find on cars like the Ford Edge/Escape, GMC Terrain when in an off road situation due to the terrain options available. At least IMO. It's the major reason I picked the Jeep over the competition.
