Never happened to me in 3 years. I would only consider it normal if the system overheated for some reason. It seems like it just reset itself when you turned it off. By then the error fault cleared itself because the initial problem was gone. The "4wd temporary unavailable overheated" is a safety off for the system.
I am a bit confused by the "I was driving on -4 in auto with some snow mode but mostly auto " statement.
I would understand that as you switching between auto and snow mode. I do not understand - 4? Maybe limiting your top gear to 4?

Now in my opinion, switching between Auto and snow is a meaningless exercise. Staying in Auto will give you 4WD on demand automatically as conditions dictate. You will not even notice the switch usually unless the rpm jumps a little higher. It can and will move between the 2 modes seamlessly.
4WD Snow gives you a fixed proportional power to each axle that is best for snow.
Now with that said, I will drive in snow mode if there is snow on the road. If there is no snow on the road I use Auto. I let auto handle the task of 4wd or not.
That is my day to day setting. Its rare that I change modes. Auto is FWD by default which will maximize mpg.

Whether continuously jumping modes could have caused the problem you had, that is the question. I would guess that might be it. Also if you were running higher RPM's that will generate more heat in the gear box. Air flow cools it.
Just leave it in one mode or the other.

My advice is leave it in Auto unless continuous conditions dictate one of the other modes.

If it happens again, take it in. I've seen it on my 2014 quite a lot and on my 2016 I've only seen it once. Due to the wording of your message I'm guessing you have either a 2014 or 2015. The 2014s I believe had a lower temperature limit.

If you had kept driving within 10-20 minutes the message would have gone away and you'd have had 4wd back. Don't worry about switching between modes. Personally, if the road is damp or snow is visible and the temps are below 32 or if there is slush I run snow mode. Otherwise it's in auto. You can switch between modes at will as often as you want.

@Jeepster1 Sorry that's the temp outside -4c and I'm switching to snow mode if there is tons of snow in the hwy and its slippery so I prefer to have it .. rather than waiting for my tire to slip... @Len1304 I have a 2015 thanks for the info.

Only Real time I had the message is when we were stuck in some mud and had to use copious amounts of wheel spin in mud mode (low range and locked) to get her out ...........all while my buddy used his TH to pull me back with a recovery strap.
If you are getting it just normal driving in snow I would suspect something is definitely wrong. I did have one other time it came up when my PTU wasn't working and the fronts were spinning to climb a small hill. Because nothing was going rearward, something in between was overheating and causing an alarm.
Try putting it in sport mode (which locks 4x4 on) and floor it on a slippery surface (snow covered parking lot with no one around will work good, or a gravel road) while a friend observes from outside. If the back wheels aren't spinning, you have a PTU issue (and a FWD Cherokee) which will need to be addressed and can easily cause the symptoms noted.

I got that message during normal operation on my 2016. I was towing my trailer through Moab in snow and icy covered roads. On a 2015 I'm not surprised. Depending on how long the OP had been driving it and how aggressive they were driving I can see it happening.

Due to how long you'd been driving I say it was because of how long you were in 4wd even in auto. No worries I'd say. However, if it gives you further trouble I'd go to a dealer.

I understand. At those temperatures the 4wd is always on. The only thing snow mode does at that point is use a more aggressive program for staying under control and lock out 1st gear, oh and it turns on the headlights for you if your headlights are also on auto.
