Yep, sounds like that station is ripping drivers off. Charging them for more fuel than they actually pumped into their tank.

15.8 gallons for 2.4 and 3.2, unless it has the ballooning filler tube option .

16 gallons and change very likely, if you top it off. I don't think posted capacity takes filler tube into consideration.

Warning : these Cherokees do not like topping off. Stop after the first click, don't even think about squeezing that handle again

Oh trust me I know lol, I didn't top it off at all. That's where it shut off the first time.

Side note: filled up my co-workers Dodge avenger today and the pump shut it off at less than quarter of a gallon even though the tank was almost empty lol. He said he's had the problem for a while now.

Oh... no topping off... I don't remember anybody else putting so much in a Cherokee then. Might be worth reporting them, as suggested above.

Either the Avenger has a back pressure problem, or the nozzle needs maintenance.

Actually if you did a slow fill you might have put a bit into the filler tube which would have accounted for that 15.9.
A fast fill should have shut off faster with less gas in due to the back pressure from that fast fill.
But just remember that the fuel pump requires ample gas around it to keep it cool. You do not want to continually overheat the pump as they are very expensive to replace.

But you were on fumes and you are lucky.
Thanks for the story
