10W30 oil is fine to pentastar 3.2?

Hi,

I just had my 60.000km logbook service at an official Jeep dealership and they put 10W30 Shell Helix into my Cherokee Trailhawk.
If I`m right the spec is 5W20.

Is it ok, should I do something?

Hmmm... Jeep says 5w-20 and the Shell web site says 5w-20 but suggest their Pennzoil 5w-20? It seems odd that your Jeep dealer would use 10w-30 Helix?? Probably depending on your climate 10w-30, just kinda strange is all? Maybe all they had on hand...hope not!

Which Helix? I think there are a couple types?

Go Jeep!!!

Shell Helix oil is our North American equivalent to Penzoil Platinum, and Helix Platinum Ultra = Penzoil Ultra Platinum (Shell owns Penzoil). Helix is sold in Europe, and elsewhere like the South Pacific...
My book says 5W20 for the Pentastar. And if I recall, there is a mention we can use 5W30 if unable to buy 5W20, but just a one-time thing and to go back to 5W20 at next oil change.
I'm pretty sure 10W30 is not good oil for the Pentastar, no matter where you live. It may also effect powertrain warranty.

@Leo Meisels : your dealer doesn't seem to know what they are doing here. You should bypass them immediately and write or call FCA in your part of the world, let them know what your dealer did, and ask for the proper oil be put in your engine as soon as possible, at no cost to you of course.

This is what you need : http://www.shell.com/motorist/oils-l...-sn-5w-20.html

I checked on the Shell site and their Helix Ultra 10W30 does seem to meet Chrysler MS-6395 as well, which I find bizarre.

Ok I did more reading on the Shell site.

Helix HX7 is semi synthethic. They make it in a bunch of grades including 5W20. But... they don't seem to show the Chrysler MS-6395 spec at all. That is bizarre, because conventional Penzoil 5W20 does, here in North America. So probably just an incomplete spec sheet on the Shell site.

Helix Ultra is their full synthetic.

Hey Mark,

Big thank!

I already wrote an email to them, waiting for the reply although they seems to be the same company, at least they are just one corner from each other (
Will see.

No way should you be putting 10/30 into the Pentastar unless it was for emergency purposes only. I'm sure they have a fully synthetic 5/20 which is what the Pentastar V6 requires. For overall engine life you want it to start out as thin as possible for your climate zone and while Melbourne is plenty hot, the 5/20W allows for the oil to thicken up to 20W when appropriate but the 5W is for startup and getting the lubricant to the proper places quickly.

In the cold areas of North America many people run 0-20W especially in Winters where the cold weather package comes in handy. I use Mobil One 5-20W as it so easily found. My dealer uses Penzoil, so next time I'm in I might let them switch if they are using the fully synthetic 5-20w, but get that 10-30w outta your engine as soon as possible. That's and oil from decades past and not for newer 21st century engines, which the Pentastar V6 definitely are.

Most fleets have found out the hard way that 10/30 is a no go. The Pentastar has always been susceptible to Cam/Follower issues The Variable Cam Timing oil passages are very small, not designed for that weight of oil. I cannot believe any Dealer would use it.

Well they did it was probably the most expensive 10W30 sold on the planet for $139 / 5.5L
