Check engine light surprise

My check engine light came on my 2016 KL yesterday and it was flashing so I parked it until today when I could get it to the dealership. Was a questionable drive there, 8 Kms away and I was positive I was going to be stuck on the side of the road.
They took it in right away, I needed an oil change as well so he started taking the cover off to change the oil and discovered some kind of rodent had completely eaten away at my electrical wires. I wasn't running on all cylinders when it was driving either.
Of course, this isn't covered by warranty so I'm paying out of pocket. They estimate $400 plus tax by the time it's all said and done.

@Shellbell ;

Oh man... that sucks !!

Mice or squirrels ? Do you live out in the country ?

I visited someone 10 minutes away from here who have squirrels doing some damage to their cars... That's why I saw mouse traps on their F150's tires (doh !)

We have members here who have posted about rodents chewing away at their wires and insulation... so I'm sure you'll get a few tips on how to control them (hopefully...).

fun fact: if the CEL is ON, driving it for a while until you can fix the issue is not that big a deal. if the CEL is FLASHING, continuing to drive the car even a mile could result in catastrophic engine failure. flashing means pull over, turn it off, and DO NOT restart it under any circumstances if at all possible. in ten years in the car business, i've only ever seen a flashing CEL once.

Oh boy. Such bad luck! Wonder if that rodent has taken a ride in the engine compartment with you a time or two...?

I back on to a conservation so there certainly are rodents around.

That's what the service tech told me to. Re: driving it. In hindsight I should have called a tow and if ever something like that happened again, I definitely will.

I'm wondering the same thing... and how long the damage has been building up or if it just happened all at once.

Pack rat ? Bush rat?
Try spraying cheap vodka in engine compartment. Excavation contractor next door swears by it. Claims he never samples it.

Ammonia works too but has to be added more often. Also moth balls and spilled diesel fuel.
Rodent deterrent (cat pee).

Leave hood open. Preferably under cover.

Park it in a rodent proof garage

Set out lots of bucket and teeter totter traps!
Bait with cut apple, onion, nuts sometimes cheese. Strategically place yellow plastic rat traps in behind logs etc in obvious runways.

Can't get poison blocks any more, and the rodents spread it around everywhere. .

Check out your wood pile/shed and any old nearby abandoned structures. Also slob neighbours for about 1/2 mile around. ( poor sanitary practise feeding livestock: chicken feed horse feed pellets, grain etc will bring rodents close)

Check inside cab, if it was a mouse, the insulation from the fire walls looks to have been shredded.
On Chev S10's mice used to be able to crawl through the firewall wire way openings.

Yep been there and had the repair bill too.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I've checked inside the cabin too to bottom for any evidence and can't find anything.

The service tech also suggested rubbing a dryer sheet all over the engine cover.

I was noticing mouse crap on top of my battery cover last October whenever I opened the hood. Thought I was imaging things, but it kept coming back every few days after I cleaned it off. Discovered the weather seal was torn on my garage door and he was getting in through there from outside, and obviously crawling into that warm space created by residual engine heat. Also found evidence upstairs in the house of his presence. Set a snap trap, which caught the culprit first night, replaced my garage door seal, and no problem since.
