Aluminum Hood bent

Yup punched my TH into the back of a Suzuki, ouch! Aluminum hood bent, 4 of the 7 hood vents broken right front fender crinked (just enough to chip paint) inside plastic all busted and worse of all transmission oil cooler bent and leaking! Front bumper, tow hooks never touched. Rear of Suzuki with "tire mount" (caused all my troubles!) folded all the way inside of vehicle! All this at 5 to 8 mph!!! Just left the stop sign after stopping when he decided to stop again 20 feet traveled at most, Ice and sand involved, ABS never made a click! Still my bad!:crying:

Looks like it's gonna be tough with that oil cooler f'd up... nice "lifetime" fluid tranny to mess with. Even a "special" tool needed to see how much fluid is left in there?? Looks like 2 oz. or so on TH and floor???:frown: At the body shop now will find out how bad Monday? Even though hood slightly bent, "Jeep" untouched, cuz aluminum probably new complete?

Not very strong stuff, really tender, think big damage on Suzuki actually easier, Looked a real lot worse til I saw the oil cooler!

Go Jeep!!! but slow!:crying:

Sorry to hear that Wolfdog. Your description had me thinking about those flatbed trucks, etc. with the decapitators sticking out the rear well before the metal bumper. Thank goodness you didn't slide into one of those!

Only luck so far (I hope) oil cooler radiator didn't hit engine radiator? Does not seem so up to this point. If the other vehicle didn't have that tire on the back hatch O think at that low speed the tow hooks would sure have helped? No contact at all with those or the bumper!:frown:

No pics, don't wanna remember...cant seem to get stuff from coputer onto this site?? Got some into my album, after that no luck? Computer illiterate and still have a flip phone w/no internet!!

I have to check it out too, my body shopis up to $4600 estimate on my insurance site?? Bumper not affected at all, no marks on it or tow hooks? Fender near hood has a little kink, something moved! Hood shot I guess cuz aluminum the replace, paint and black hood decal. Fender, how bad gotta talk, didn't look like much but they don't build/fix em like they usta I guess. Don't know if they send it to the local Jeep dealer for the oil cooler radiator for that fix? I'll keep you all posted Gonna try and talk with them tomorrow? My nickel on the rental car, just found out no rental on my insurance!!:crying: If weather clears of rain I'll do the FJR and dump the rental.

Oh ya the rental, a Dodge Dart...how could the Cherokee ever have come from that platform, what a piece of crap!! The transmission, a 6 speed is really great it's an auto but when you downshift, it really instantly downshifts, much better that way than our "9" speed although not nearly as smooth. Just for the positive manual down shifts I think I'd rather have it, the transmission only?? Not only that, it's like sitting in and getting out of a hole when getting in and out! I guess I'm just any kind of a Jeep spoiled!

Update :-(

$4600. fix cost, good thing I wasn't going 10 mph!! That price is on my insurance web site, gonna talk to the body shop tomorrow and talk. Closed tonight,s aw my TH thru the garage door though. New hood, bumper off (I could see absolutely no damage to bumper?) The bent hood could still latch and unlatch so probably some Damage/movement to pieces attached to bumper? Red tow hooks untouched, if the other guy had no tire on his back hatch I think I woulda missed him by an inch or two?? Well I'll stop crying and be glad I don't have back eyes from an air bag deployment, they never even peeped, just like my ABS, felt nada??

Long as it looks as good as before all I care! I won't be happy with having a bad car fax. When I traded my wife's L they Liberty they dumped the same price off that it cost to fix it! All new Jeep parts and the accident was not even our fault!!! I went to two other dealers, same story "sorry you've got a car fax on this" !! Really stinks, best body shop all Jeep parts and paid to look like new! Simple repairs on the Liberty's butt, drove that a month before having it fixed! Except for the transmission oil cooler I could have driven my TH as long as I wanted! No matter, screwed the price of the repairs when selling or trade time? Makes no sense at all!

OK, cryin' done!

Sorry to hear that. I hope it all turns out good. Mine goes into the body shop on Monday for a door dent.

Have to wonder if Forward Collision Warning with Mitigation in the tech group could have avoided all this since you were on snow/sand. On dry surface road, it sounds like it would. Not sure if it is smart enough to consider reduced traction in snow and thus compensate....

"If a Forward Collision Warning with Mitigation event
begins at a speed below 20 mph (32 km/h), the system
may provide the maximum braking possible to mitigate
the potential forward collision."

As the crappy reflex driver I really think it would have! I looked left closest traffic direction I looked right, I looked forward the vehicle I hit was about 25 feet into the intersection moving I moved out of the stop sign checked right again cuz I was entering that traffic side. Looked ahead and there he was!!! Sand and salt aside I do think it would have helped? Every time I see an add for that on TV, I think that!!

One interesting thing has come from this after riding my MC a few days and the body shop still not finished I had to rent again!! The rental company gave me a brand new Renegade Limited and I must say I am impressed. It's pretty much a base model Limited, leather, Sirius etc and 4wd lock. It's roomy to drive I'm 6' 2" has great head room (no sunroof) and with seats down in rear seems darn near as much room as the Cherokee. It's kinda peppy and the tranny works perfect! That's my report and I'm sticking to it! 65 mile highway commute next 3 days we'll see after that?:| Further report on Renegade if anyone interested? My wife's Cherokee lease runs out next year, she's very interested!

Here's a scenario for you with the JKU. You brake hard and the front dives and your bumper picks up the Suzuki by the rear tire carrier and your grill gets bent like the new 2018 JK or JL grill.

Plus that rear hatch on the Suzuki will have to be replaced, with damage to your KL, that tire carrier bent the whole unit.

My wife has had two Renegades (one was totaled) and she loves them. She test drove Limiteds, and Trailhawks and she liked the height and feel of the Trailhawk better.
First was red, second is white. They're capable cars. We haven't had any issues with either of then... Except the tow truck that destroyed the first one [emoji14]

Your OP reminds me of the time I was in the back of a chain-reaction collision. I was driving my Altima and must have hit the BMW X5 in front of me at well under 10mph. Maybe 5? No airbag deployment despite a perfectly squared up collision. Regardless, my hood buckled, as did the front quarterpanels. Pretty much every piece of trim and body forward of the front axles needed to be replaced. It looked ridiculously bad. Hood wouldn't stay latched, so on the flatbed it went.

Body shop estimate was $9K. All body work. Not even the radiator was poked. In fact, I believe one of the two headlights was intact. Impact never even got to the frame. Car was perfect after.

ZERO damage to the X5. Pretty sure since we were both standing on our brakes, their back end was elevated and my nose was sinking. I slid right under/into the bottom of their bumper.

Crumple zones did their job, I guess. But ****, modern cars are expensive to fix.

Glad you're okay.

Sometimes I think the so called "crumple zones" were designed for the body shops! No one hurt thank you, in Massachusetts It will be costly, 3 to 5 years of surcharges and raise in policy cost that hurts! It was just after a pretty good snow storm so applying for a hearing on the surcharge. Try to blame some of it on the weather, only excuse I might have.:crying:

The only good thing at all besides no one hurt is a few days with a new Renegade Limited! Really kinda neat, I was more impressed than I thought? Great gas mileage at fairly high speeds 75 plus 27/28 mpg. The transmission I think is better than both our Tailhawks, seen 9th lots more and would engage itself at 75 and stay in 9th down to about 60mph. Both our TH's only see 9th at 80 plus down hill and soon as level shift back to 8th. When down shifted manually it does it like a "normal" tranny, revs go up car slows right away, not so both our TH's?? It did have a bit of difficulty accelerating above 60 which the V6 TH's do not! Makes sense I guess, just a 4 banger! Leather seats OK but not as comfy as the TH, overall though pretty nice. Wife really liked it...oh, oh!!:surprise:
