When I got out of the car, in the middle of no where, I left my wallet, my cellphone, my house keys, my spare key, my sunglasses, my licence and registration, my lunch....and my dog, all in the car because I was not intending to lock the car when I got out. I was not worried about someone stealing those items from my car while I moved the branch. It is unlikely that I would have said, okay, I need to pocket my spare key, because the dog will stand on the armrest and lock the doors after I get out. If I had thought that far ahead with what prescience I might have had, I would have taken the car key out of the ignition and put that in my pocket. Or lowered my window. or not shut the door. Or taken the dog with me. **** happens. That spare key is not always going to be where you want it, when you want it.
As it happens there was a big rock lying next to my car which did the trick.
