RA3/RA4 Over-air updates

Saw this notice in my system this morning. Looks like Chrysler will begin doing over-air updates soon for the touch-screen radios. No more need to log in to driveuconnect.com and download an update on a flash drive.

Quote:
Over-the-Air Software Update Starting 03/20/2017

Customer vehicles will start receiving an Over-the-Air Software Update that will occur in a phased roll-out starting 03/20/2017. An Over-the-Air Software Update is a method of delivering new software to a vehicle through a wireless cellular network. Over-the-Air Software updates help ensure that a vehicle’s Uconnect system works with the latest smartphones, improves quality, and allows FCA to add new services for customers to enjoy. DEALERS SHOULD NOT REPLACE RADIOS. This is a routine update and dealership staff should be notified of the attached FAQ document [see post attachment] to address any consumer questions.

FCA vehicles equipped with Uconnect Access connected services, featuring a built-in cellular connection may receive Over-the-Air Software Updates. The vehicle must be located in the US and in range of a useable cellular network.

The following vehicle’s offer Uconnect Access on the 8.4-inch systems:
* 2015-17 Chrysler 200 * 2015-16 Chrysler 300
* 2017 Chrysler Pacifica
* 2015-16 Dodge Challenger
* 2015-16 Dodge Charger
* 2014-17 Dodge Durango
* 2013-17 Dodge Viper
* 2014-17 Jeep Cherokee
* 2014-17 Jeep Grand Cherokee
* 2015-17 Jeep Renegade (Uconnect 6.5)
* 2013-17 Ram 1500
* 2013-17 Ram 2500/3500/Chassis Cab

Note: The 2017 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Challenger and the 2017 Jeep Compass will not receive this over-the-air software update.

I guess if you did not activate UConnect you can get the same update the "old fashioned" way? Not clear from this.

Wow. PDF there is a FAQ. Pretty sure one of the most frequently asked question is : what about those who don't have cellular service and/or live outside the US ? Not a word in there.

What terrible communications from FCA / UConnect on this. Really-really bad.

My iPhone updates over the air. I guess I can let my Uconnect update, if I get the message on my screen.

Not clear to me if you need to be subscribed or not... @IRSmart can you confirm one way or the other? Thanks.

I cannot, unfortunately. I just happened to see this notice in the system when i was going about my daily routine. I am positive that if i go ask a service writer, i'll get a bunch of shoulder shrugs. perhaps @JeepCares can help?

Actually since I believe it requires the latest u-connect update, the one with Siri, it may actually be possible without a subscription. They may have updated the u-connect to call home using the 3g on a schedule.
I would also guess that the signal would have to originate from your vehicle in order to do the connection if needed. That alone is scary/helpful as it could conceivably allow FCA to upload vehicle information on how its performing and any error codes in the system. That would further allow them to send notices of needed service or system failures. Helpful to many that ignore basic things on their vehicle. Also helpful to FCA in the area of tort.
If I have not stretched this too far your vehicle and driving habits will be in the cloud soon. That alone would more than pay for the 3g service of updates.

Especially when they get the income for selling that information to the insurance companies......

Hi IRSmart,

You do not need an active Uconnect Access subscription to receive Over-the-Air Software updates but do need a vehicle equipped with Uconnect Access connected services, featuring a built-in cellular connection, to receive the update.

That never made sense why we had to do that. If my Jeep can send me a vehicle health report email and such, why can't it download it's own update
