I always keep a copy of my home and car key in a credit card sized envelope in my wallet, just for such emergencies.

I think the difference may be that you had it running. There has been times where I had my fob and the wife went to lock her stuff in the KL. If her fob is among those items, it honks three times and will not lock. However, if you have auto lock turned on and leave the car running it will lock (assuming you are inside with the fob and want to be safe).

Ours will do it after a certain time too. It's not that long either, but I don't know what the time is. I can test when the wife gets home with Klondike.

Mine does the same thing however yesterday doors locked after I got out and closed the doors. I think there may be a preset time limit with engine running and car parked. I'm not sure exactly how long it was as I was talking to a friend, but was pretty quick. In my case I think @SS_Syndicate may be right in that the vehicle was running. Soon as I'm done with breakfast I'm going to try it again here at home and try to duplicate the issue. We shall see in a bit...

The engine running is the key here. The Jeep thought that you were in it, so it allowed the doors to lock. Inside/outside doesn't make any difference: the distance from the transmitter (FOB) to the receiver is what counts.

Update:

OK now I'm really mystified here!? I went out to carport and tried to replicate the issue to no avail. I did everything exactly as yesterday and even tried it several times. Doors did not lock. Key fob and cell were placed in exact location as yesterday in passenger seat, window cracked the same as well. I have NO clue here how or why that happened yesterday, but it did? I do know it happened so for safety sake i'm keeping my fob in my pocket as I was an hour from home with cell locked in running car as well. I just have no explanation here guys.

I had many questions about the keyfob situation when I first got mine. Will someone be able to jump in while I'm close at the gas pump and drive off? could some Bad Guy just open my locked doors because it senses my keyfob close?

what Ive found is that it has several seensors around the vehicle and can tell if the fob is inside or outside. wont unlock by handle if fob is inside. Wont let you lock by handle if the fob is inside until 3 tries. etc... its a fairly smart system.

I agree @HawkeyeKL In fact, It's almost a nuisance for us at times. We take a fair amount of pictures... On several occasions I (the holder of the fob) have asked my son or wife for a slightly better angle to the backdrop. The KL will throw the e-brake and go warning chime crazy until the fob is back in the vehicle. #FirstWorldProblems LOL
