Not all KLs have push-button start. Some still have a typical tumbler/key ignition. The ones with a key have a fob attached on the tail of the key.

Maybe this is a 16-17 change. My 14 limited will not lock with the fob inside. If engine is running and you open the door the locks pop to unlock. If you try to hit the lock button on door with either front door open the locks are disabled. I have also left fob inside with engine running for over 30 minutes with no locking taking place. If engine is off you have to attempt locking fob in Jeep 3 times before it allows it on the 4th. I took the spare door only key in the fob and had copies made just in case for the manual door tumbler. Maybe check with your dealer or corporate if the 10 second auto locking is by design. Seems like a glitch to me. Mine only auto locks at 15 mph.

one time when I was locked out of my 2001 Ford Escape the AAA guy used a small flat crow bar to pry open the top corner of the driver's door, then used a small inflatable airbag to keep it open, just enough to use a long prod to push the unlock button

This happened to me the other day! Getting ready to leave my parents house, it was hot outside, so I started my car to let it cool if. Went to get in to leave and all doors were locked and my FOB sitting in the passenger seat. My husband was at a military event and my spare was over two hours away. The local fire department had to come break into my car. It's stupid to me that the doors would lock with the keys inside.

I just learned today my 17 TH will not lock with fob left inside. Moved vehicle to front of house so wife could have driveway. Was wearing loose basketball type shorts and fob fell out of front pocket (I was unaware). Got out and tried to lock with botton on door handle...nothing...tried again...nothing. Was irritated for a second but then realized fob not in pocket. Opened door and sure enough, sitting there on driver's seat, pretty as you please, was my key fob! Locked immediatedly after I brought fob out of TH. I like it! (Oh, vehicle was not running).

It would have locked if you tried one more time so that you can force it to lock with the fob inside.

I've retrained my brain so well with push button starting vehicles that I leave the fob in my pocket all the time. This works against me when I drive my folks minivan... I shove the old fashioned key in my pocket, proceed to hop in the drivers seat, reach down for the push button and have an 'oh crap' moment... gotta get out of the car again and fish that key outta my pocket.
