Keeping Key Fob in pocket now!

Dropped off the mountain today for a grocery run. Was pretty warm in the valley at 90°. Loaded Jeep and started it with AC running to cool it down. Saw a friend so got out to speak to him closing the door with key fob on passenger seat. Bad move. Doors locked. FOB was lying in plain sight in passenger seat. I tried all doors and rear cargo hatch to no avail leaving me scratching my head. I'm thinking man I gotta call my insurance company and imagine this will be expensive and wondered how on earth they'd get in? Luckily I had drivers door window down a smidgen. Guy had some stiff wire we doubled over and managed to push down enough on door lock button on arm rest to get it to unlock. Took several tries. Had I not had the window cracked a bit all bets would have been off!

The part that puzzled me was the fact the key fob was lying in the clear in front passenger seat and thought it was close enough to detect my hand on door handles and unlock, but no dice! Won't ever do that again and key fob stays in pocket! Was sure glad (and lucky) I got in!

It is my understanding that the Jeep will give you 3 tries at locking the doors, with the Fob inside, before it actually locks the doors. Weird.

car wouldn't unlock because it is looking outward for the key, not inward. do you have the 8.4 radio? if so, the most expensive a lockout can ever cost you is $14.95, which is the cost for 1 month of Access. one of the benefits is being able to remotely unlock your car...assuming you have cell phone service that is!

As soon as I closed the door or a few seconds later anyway we heard the click and gave me NO tries It was a done deal and locked.

Yes I have the 8.4 radio, but let UConnect trial expire since we spend most of our time in the mountains with no UConnect access. Days like this make me rethink the Access, but again since we never used it I wrote it off seeing 90% plus of the time we have no service up here. So without the subscription that would be a no go I reckon. Can't imagine what it would have cost to get in?

I'm actually kinda glad to hear this, NOT that you got locked out of your Cherokee, but that some random dude can't simply open my door while I'm stopped at a light or something. I was wondering about that after watching the attempted car-jacking scene in "Gone in 60 Seconds" on TV over the weekend.

You misunderstood my post. Even with a completely deactivated account, it's only $14.95 per month. So, if you lock yourself out of the car, call them up and sign up for one month. $14.95 later you're in your car.

I'm with @dhh3 on this one....I did not think the Cherokee would let you lock the keys inside without a fight. I have forgotten that I left them in the cup holder when going on a hike and wondered why the heck my vehicle wouldn't lock. Fortunately remembered after two tries!

I didn't think so either Skip, but once it locked game was over. It gave me NO chances. Maybe because I had started the vehicle already? Just not sure. As mentioned it seems to seek the FOB from inside out versus outside in? I'm gonna try and duplicate this again tomorrow, but this time I'll have the wife's FOB in the house for backup lol.
