Indeed your right but remember if you upshift it will just about always work as when your intention is to shift for increased performance and the Cherokee is by default always going to be in a higher gear in auto mode as it try's to keep you between 1500 and 2000 rpm and I would never use +or - unless I wanted to be in a higher rpm range. I do agree though

Not to derail or be a spelling nerd, but particularly on a downhill slope, sometimes we do want to use engine braking. However, I don't know anyone who would want to be in a vehicle when the engine is breaking.

With so little punctuation, it's almost impossible to tell what you are trying to express. Not sure if you have upshifting and downshifting confused: For increased performance, a driver would generally desire to downshift, so manually using "-" would do the trick for that. If you try to use "+" to upshift, the vehicle may indeed go to a higher gear, but not because you told it to upshift. Rather it will go to a higher gear if conditions permitted the transmission to automatically shift to a higher gear, because you told the vehicle that the gear limit is now higher.

Ya sorry about that, I was using hands free while driving and Siri just likes to babble! I will give her a good talking to.
