Question Auto gear shift

My wife has a 2015 Cherokee and we love it. I have what probably is a dumb question but here goes anyway. The gear shift when in drive has a left shift into a plus / minus spot. What is it for. My wife got in there by mistake and could not shift to park. Thanks for any help

If you read the owners manual it will tell you all about it. That section is called Electronic Range Select it can be used to prevent the transmission from shifting too high. To shift out of this mode simply slide the selector lever back to the right and you can then shift it normally.

It also works for shifting down or shifting up control your gears it also has rpm protection so you can't hurt anything. Great for city driving!

It's also used with Hill Descent Control feature if you have it.

If you don't have a manual available, you can quickly get one in PDF format here:

Click on Add a Vehicle.

It is handy to have a copy on your phone if you want to look up something and the paper copy is not nearby.

It's actually better than the paper copy. It's more up-to-date, and more comprehensive.

Shifting up? It's ERS, Electronic Range Select, not a "Manumatic" system.

It lets you specify the max gear the transmission will take, not actually select the gear you want. As others have said, it's also used to control speed for hill descent/ascent.

Auto gear shift

For easy driving auto works fine and is safe but if you ever get into a situation like in tighter corners mountain driving you have better control slowing down before corner picking lower gear higher rpm and have motor pulling you through corner with slight acceleration than coasting through corners. Slow into corner and faster out at the apex of corner. Driving using the tach in combination with speedometer makes a good driver and a vehicle perform to it upmost. Driving off-road the same thing lugging engine so keep rpm up where it can help you going up or down.

I use this daily! You can switch in/out of it on the fly at any speeds. It's great for a variety of reasons which others have already mentioned. For me, it's mostly used to control my speed while going downhill. Also to keep the vehicle from going too high into gear, and shifting back and forth constantly while the hill momentarily levels out, while going uphill. Curvy, slightly hilly roads it's useful for keeping it from going into too high of a gear.

Another option I love, and use in place of this at times, is switching into Sport mode. The RPMs ramp up quite a bit when you first getting going from a fully stopped position, but after that, the vehicle handles so much better. Like the ERS above, Sport mode can also be switched in/out of on the fly.
