Squeaky brake pedal and a bunch of goop down there (see photo)

Brake pedal is always letting out squeaky sounds when slowly releasing the foot from it. In stop and go traffic it drives me insane. Literally, every release or minor release it makes a slow squeaky noise until the foot is all the way off the pedal or until I begin to apply the brake once again. I took a look down there and I see a bunch of gooey, yellow gunk. Not sure if this has always been there or if the dealership tried to apply it last year when I brought this issue to their attention.

Should I wipe this off or leave it? Should I spray something else down there, if so, what? It's hard to tell, but I'm pretty certain the noise is coming from that rubber area (not sure what that thing is called) with the yellow goo on it.

Mine does the same thing, I have yet to find a solution that lasts longer then a few weeks. You are correct though the noise is made by that metal shaft moving in and out of that rubber boot. It looks like someone has already attempted to fix yours with some type of white lithium grease. If its squeaking now, wiping that grease off isn't going to fix it.

Thats just white lithium grease, comes in a spray can. I used to use it on my steering shaft to fix the dreaded clunk there (my old Pontiac G6), usually works quite well but needs to be re-applied annually depending on where you're using it. Wipe it off and apply some more, make sure to work the break pedal in/out to get it in there.

Thanks for the info! I'll try and get some more of the grease and reapply it.

I had a similar problem on a different vehicle, it turned out to be the master cylinder making the noise

Maybe try WD-40? It always eliminates squeaks for me.

take it to the dealer-do not spray anything in there- it will not help.

I have a non-goopy squeaking break pedal. Not obnoxious, but it's there. I asked the service department to check on it while in for scheduled maintenance and they said it was the brake booster itself. On-order for warranty work.

Maybe somebody tried to fix your squeak by loading it up with goop.
