Head of Jeep explains Controversial Cherokee design

The Jeep Cherokee design has been controversial , and that is putting it lightly. Truck Trend got to sit down with Jeep design head Mark Allen recently to talk some more about the Cherokee's design.

"A lot of that is focused on the front, and the profile, but probably most controversial is the Cherokee name on it. We had a lot of controversy inside the company about that, and loving Jeeps as I do - I have an old Cherokee and love and respect that vehicle - why would we not use such a strong name?" Allen said.

"Even if we wanted to recreate the old square Cherokee on a front drive proportion, it just wouldn't work, and it would not be energy-efficient. it had to reenter the market fresh, have a long life, and attract a customer who wasn't buying SUV-type vehicles when the old Cherokee was around," he continued.

That customer was me, this is my first SUV-type vehicle. If it looked anything like the old Cherokee I wouldn't have bought it. Even if they had put those big round headlights on this Cherokee I wouldn't buy it.

I bought mine and remain loyal to the Jeep brand due to the reliability and capability of my 2002 Liberty. She has provided me with 12 years of excellent service & I can only hope/trust the Cherokee will do the same. I certainly didn't see anything else that came close to my needs.

Even if someone doesn't completely like how it looks, there's so much more about it to like than it's looks. The pros far out weight the cons.

The radical (and cool) new appearance and the choice of the Cherokee name really caused a stir. IMO that's not a bad thing. How many CUV launches in recent history, heck any launch in the last decade, caused so much discussion, awe, rage and debate as this one?
