Engine Stop Start (ESS)

Hi All,

I joined this forum because Iím considering a Ď15 Cherokee V6, probably a Limited as Iím not a serious off-road kind of guy. This forum has helped me learn a lot about the Cherokeeís.

Anyway, from those that have one already, whatís your opinion of the ESS? Some people are condemning it without even trying it (change can be tough) but itís been used successfully in Europe for a while. Can we get some reviews from actual owners? I know there are some Ď15's on the road already.

Some questions I have is whether the ESS keeps working when the A/C or heat is on; is the that little bit of time from when you take your foot of the brake until you hit the throttle smooth; etc.? Oh, and an obvious question: does it do as claimed and help the city gas mileage?

While I don't have ESS others have said:


Doesn't operate if heat or air is running or not up to running temp.
Starts in the time it take to move foot from brake to gas.

I've used it before but not on a Cherokee. Not sure how significant the fuel savings really are, but sometimes it bugged me when I knew I was only going to stop for 10 seconds, and it shut off after 3, only to restart a few seconds later. Yes I know it can be turned off, but then there are times on longer stoplights where it would help out.

Overall it bugged me a little more than any fuel saving benefits. If I was pinching every penny and gas was $8/$9 per gallon as it is in Europe, then it might make more sense here in the US. But I don't mind maybe paying an extra quarter on a typical commute by leaving the engine running, and not put more strain on the starting system. Occasionally if I come across a stoplight where I know I'll sit for 2+ minutes, or in a traffic standstill, I'll manually shut down the engine - with ESS that's "old school" but it works!

We have a 2015 TH V6 and it works great. I don't know about saving gas at this point, but it works very well. As soon as you take your foot off the brake, the engine starts.

I have it on my 15' TH and I must say I love that I do have it. It is pretty much seamless in operation. I feel I have saved a fair amount of fuel already not sitting and idling at stop lights in my first 850 miles, on 1/8th of the way into my 3rd tank of fuel as of yesterday. As soon as you release the brake the engine is started and ready to move by the time you are on the gas.

ESS Does operate when heating or cooling, as long as you are not currently making a major temperature change inside of the vehicle IE Going from very cold to hot or vice versa when you first get in a vehicle.

ESS Does not operate until the vehicle is up to operating temps set by the vehicle (Works in less than a mile on mine), Will not operate if low fuel light comes on.

ESS Has a beefed up starting system to handle the starting and stoping, and when the vehicle is shut down due to ESS and re starts, it is noticeably different than from a standard vehicle start, much faster.

On Order: 15' TrailHawk, Anvil, V6, Cloth/leather Interior, Cold Weather, Comfort/Conv., Trailer Tow, Nav, 9 Speaker upgrade

Other Vehicles:
08 Volvo C30 (Heavily Modfied, 300hp/400tq)
05 Wrangler TJ (Tastefully upgraded)

Everything works fast enough, it works seamless but time will tell if the added wear and tear will cost more than the fuel it saves. I don't like it and try to remember to turn it off every time I start the TH.

One thing I did find really annoying is when you're going to park with ESS on as soon as you stop the engine will turn off, then when you move the gear to park it will automatically restart. So its auto starting within 1-2 seconds. To me that doesn't seem normal or good for the engine especially when I am going to be shutting it off again. Stop signs are annoying, and short reds.

It is TRULY annoying in BMWs, according to my BMW-owner friends. Shake, rattle, and roll. I look at all of our issues with our ZF supplied transmissions and the wobble, all the niggling problems 2014 owners have, and look at ESS as just one more problem to add to the Forum topics. No thanks. Just wait for the new ASP system - Advanced Squirrel Power. Runs on nuts, pretty much what these designers all are.

Chrysler is about to complete its merger with Fiat. I get razzed enough that I love and drive Jeeps. As follows: JEEP: Just Expect Every Problem or Just Empty Every Pocket. FIAT: Fix It Again Tony. When my vehicles disappear into the shop for days and I'm tooling around in a 300C or 200 rental, I avoid my foreign car owning friends like the plague.

Yeh, the thought of ESS in my next one thrills me. I think next time around I'll just get another Wrangler provided they keep it pure and don't toss any more needless gee-gaws to keep the idiots in Washington happy with all their auto regulations. The more tech they get, the worse these vehicles are.

Didoom has it right. I just got a 15 Cherokee Limited. At first I couldn't even tell it was working; now I tend to notice it, sometimes with a slight hesitation when starting. But it is pretty subtle and not a problem unless you are planning on drag racing from stoplights - in which case you have the wrong car to start. And, of course, you can turn it off. To me, it's just another interesting feature on a very modern hi-tech car; which my car is, and I don't even have the tech package.

If you turn the ESS button off will it remain off the next time you start the vehicle? Or does it just default to on again?
