I never see 9th gear on my commutes. But I did pay attention recently, and actually saw that it exists on my recent trip! I usually saw it when going >76mph when going down hills, since I never drive faster than 75 when I'm on interstates... Now I just note when the RPMs drop from ~1750 (when I'm usually in 8th gear), down to ~1500 rpm, which is where 9th gear is seen.

Same for me but I think it can't be too steep a hill because maybe engine breaking kicks in.

Gently bump the gear shift knob to the left, the gear number will show where the D is on the display.

I usually cruise in 7th on my commute....I think I've seen 8 once or twice, I never hit 9 without shifting in myself.

8th here happens very regularly. 9th is under perfect conditions, and has happened less than a dozen times probably over the last 10 months. (and even then, just for very short distances)

I guess I'm lucky . I have a five mile freeway decline on the way to work and then back home,
on a 22 mile each way trip .
Provided no-one suddenly pulls out in front of me it stays in 9th at about 1300 rpm on the decline
at about 75mph to 60ish .
Sometimes it will go into 9th on a long flat stretch , but not for long .

I never saw 8th till I hit 2,000+ miles. It was always in 7th.
Now anytime between a low of around 62 to 70+ I am in 8th. That is unless I am on a hill.
9th on a downhill at 74mph and my foot off the gas. I did not see 9th till I hit 3,000+ miles.
Also you can not shift into 9th. You can only set 9th as your high gear.
The transmission will determine what gear it will use. It will not use 9th that I know of.
You can only limit the top gear it is allowed to use.
Like when I tow I set the high gear that the transmission is allowed to use as 7th.
Also when my Cherokee started to use 8th my mpg increased noticeably, very noticeably.

Yes, mpg is much better when cruising in 8th, which is most of my hwy driving between 70-75. I haven't towed anything yet, but will in the future...as such I only limit the high gears when going down very steep hills and use either 7 or 6 (very steep grades).
