No problems with the starter or the original battery so far. I would hope that FCA refines the system as the years go by as the re-start isn't quite as 'instant' as it could be sometimes. I've seen ESS designs that have a combination starter/alternator on the accessory belt drive. That, plus the addition of something like Mazda's i-stop system that starts the engine by firing a cylinder on it's power stroke, ( http://www2.mazda.com/en/csr/environ...009_02_01.html ) should make a really fast, smooth ESS system.
I also like the smoothness and silence of having the engine off at traffic lights. It's what I like the most about the system. Originally I was ready to order a 2014 but waited for MY 2015 to get Stop/Start.

In addition to the combination starter/alternator on the accessory belt drive you mentioned, Valeo and Denso manufacture reversible alternators that are a charger and starter in one.

My ESS consistently starts very quickly; probably in the vicinity of the .3 seconds Jeep stipulated. In almost every case I beat other cars off the line even with the 3.2L engine stopped.

However, I agree with @Mark_ it would be better if the system delayed for a second or two before going into stop mode.

Don't have Jeep ESS (2014 Cherokee), but stopping and starting is totally controllable from the brake pedal on my other vehicle: feather brake pedal to very light pedal pressure coming to a stop and no auto stop; feather it to very light pedal pressure while stopped/auto off, and it will restart - ready for immediate launch. It takes a bit of practice to find & learn the sweet spot but it's there and usable.

Perhaps the Jeep ESS works the same.

It does. However, I find that - at least with mine - the pedal pressure needed to avoid an engine stop is so light it is easy to miss. The bigger problem with zero delay coming to a stop is for situations like coming to s stop with the intent of parking the Jeep, or to go into reverse ; in these situations you are often focusing on other tasks than feathering the throttle at a red light, and getting an enginie stop just before you put the tranny in Park or Reverse is frustrating, because as we all know the engine will restart as you move the shifter up from Drive.
I've come to use the slide into Neutral technique to avoid all engine stops when I don't want them. Go into Neutral just before the wheels stop turning.

A full one second delay (or 2 seconds) would go a long way in making the ESS experience seemless, efficient and much more tolerable for the naysayers.. I think.

Another one is stopping on even a slight downhill grade. It takes a little more pedal pressure to bring the vehicle to a stop and that puts the pedal past the point. As soon as the vehicle hits zero mph, ESS kicks in. If there was a second or two delay the driver could back off on the pedal a tad after the vehicle stops.

I am thinking of adding a couple of seconds or so additional ESS delay before it kicks in as a selectable mode in a future version of SmartStopStart. I'll keep you guys posted.

Listen to what Aussie John (Cadogan) has to say, then stop worrying. I love this guy! He is the voice of reason. He has a 100+ automotive topics to listen to and if you have a new problem, email him. He'll respond with an answer and maybe even make a video segment about it.
