9th Gear

After reading a few threads on the forum about at what speeds 9th gear would engage, driving home this morning the car was doing 80mph, (breaking speed limit), approx. 1600rpm flicked lever across and in 9th gear. I already knew it would engage 8th gear at a steady 60mph, will have to try 70mph (the legal speed limit) and see which gear it's in.
The car has the 2.2 litre 197bhp Diesel engine fitted, and has 1000miles on the clock.

That will have you sipping fuel at 80 MPH, nice to hear

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

Averaged 41mpg over the 1000miles on generally normal roads, had 46 on a good motorway run.
By the way these are imperial gallons not US gallons but still good.

A downhill run after hitting those speeds always puts mine into 9th. I have been able to replicate it every time under those conditions.

Just put your transmission into low and you'll see 9th gear all the time.

Low range on the ADII will give you 9th gear every time at around 50kmh

Cheers, Dave.

Only got ADI, so not likely to see 9th all the time. It must do wonders for your fuel consumption.

Unfortunately most will never see 9th.
The sweet spot for performance on this engine/transmission seems to be 1600 rpm.
The Cherokee will use whatever gear is needed to achieve this sweet spot.
It will shift as fast as possible to get to this sweet spot.
The end result is maximum gas mileage. That is the reason the ZF is on this Cherokee.
Running under this sweet spot in rpm just puts drag on the engine. That is what would happen in 9th at say 70 mph.
