3rd gear not what you think

Yes this is about the third gear down shift issue. I had just taken my Trailhawk in after a long trip to the Jeep Jamboree in Tillamook Oregon. It behaved on the trail but driving in town, in and out of sport mode it would stay in third when coming to a stop then not shifting to 1st till nearly floored. So I took it in and the dealer ship ran a system check and no codes were found. I said that no that is was having issues. They said with no codes it is running as designed. I was not happy but what could I do. So I wrote a polite message to our own Jeep cares Kori to let her know what had happened. She helped set up another visit to the dealer where they with the help of the FCA techs found the transmission did indeed have an issue that required to order a new transmission not another 2014 trans as my Trailhawk is a June 2014 build but one just of the manufacture line. But the part was on defendant back order. So I got my Trail hawk back after 15 days with the part on order and nothing else to show for it. A bit bummed out i dropped another polite e-mail to my case coordinator Troy expressing my dismay at what had happened in the last two weeks. I guess he forwarded it to his bosses as within two days, on Friday I got a call from Michigan FCA home office from a rep letting me know that the transmission had been shipped and would be at the dealership on Monday. They apologized for the confusion for the order issues. So I dropped my Trailhawk off Monday but with a snag it had to wait for a transmission stall to open as the cars in there were waiting for parts and could not be moved out. They estimated that i should be done by Wednesday. Bummed I waved goodbye and got into the Enterprise rental Patriot for another week or so. So I thought they call today Tuesday of the next week and said it was ready. Wow a day early hopped right down and picked it up. Looking at the work order they not only had they replaced the transmission they found a leak in the left half shaft and replaced it too. They even washed it before I picked it up. with patience and not a dime out of my pocket it is fixed and running great smooth shifts and no third gear issues at all so far. I hope that this story might take the doom and gloom out of transmission issues, in my case it all worked out in the end with a few bumps on the way.

@Pondhopper - Thanks for the detailed report. Funny you mentioned the hang in third gear. Just had that happen in my Cherokee two days ago. Went away after coming to a full stop. I thought for a moment it had gone into limp mode. Hasn't happened again.

Yes, thanks for the report. Glad @JeepCares could be so helpful and that FCA really stepped up. With a 2014 at about the same mileage, it's nice to know they are still resolving trans issues, albeit with a bit of prodding.

Sorry to hear about the problems you had trying to get Jeep working on it, but very pleased with the result. All the best. - Ted

It seems pretty sad that the only option for "fixing" the inability for a downshift to 2nd gear is a physical replacement of the entire transmission. I got the latest updates on my 2015 transmission, and now I'm seeing the no-2nd issue too. There's a similar issue where if I'm moving forward and plop it into Reverse before coming to a complete stop, there's a gawdawful clunk when it shifts. That's new too.

But on the flipside, with the software update I find that it upshifts a bit sooner on highway driving, which is showing me a noticeable improvement in gas mileage. It's still weird though, because I can drive down one road at 90kph and have it in 8th gear, then hit the highway and go to 120kph, and it often gets "stuck" at 7th gear. Weirdest algorithm I've seen.

If you're in cruise control, blip the speed up 2-4kph wait a couple of seconds, then down. You should see the transmission shift up to 8th again.

I would think shifting into Reverse before coming to a complete stop would be a "no,no" and could damage your transmission depending
on how fast you are moving forward when doing that. I try to not shift into reverse until I am a complete stop or from reverse to a forward gear until I am at a complete stop..

(you can find that warning not to shift to Reverse until after a complete stop on page 452 in the 2015 owners manual)-sure it would be all KL model year manuals.)

Sad that I am in the same boat as well as other issues with the shifting. Of course there are no codes so I would always receive the "It is shifting as indented" or "driving how it was designed" or “there are 9 gears so it may occasionally get confused”. I sent a message to @JeepCares with all the issues I am having with the shifting but it is horrible that we have to flood Kori's inbox asking for a little help.
