PTU, RDM, and driveshaft here. Believe me, I was scared/nervous this past weekend. Went up to Canada to visit Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park. Recommended everywhere that a high clearance vehicle was necessary (Prius stayed home). 16km in on this road to the trailhead. Prius wouldn't have made it (though a nutso blond was met on the way out in a Civic -- almost there, too!). Was nervous that my new parts would not make it and leave us stranded in the middle of nowhere (3400' elevation climb) in Canada!!!! All worked out well, though!

The PTU is the power transfer unit. It is bolted to the transaxle near the front of the drivetrain. It's only found on the 4WD KLs. It transfers some of the engine's power through the drive shaft to the rear wheels.

The PTU is part of the drivetrain. It's covered under that warranty. Find another dealer if told otherwise.

Concur - PTU is covered. See my original post. Lucky the drive shaft is as well. You might need one of those too. I did.

PTU was covered. Cost was > $5000. Worst mechanical problem in 50 years of car ownership...no confidence in Cherokee now.

Just a word of warning on the PTU...

As this thread is about - in early DEC my KL was making noise, they replaced the PTU... my KL made the same noise, they replaced the driveshaft... got a free/new PTU out of it.

Two weeks ago my 4WD SVC light started coming on intermittently... then it came on for good. Took it back to the dealership. The kid who processed me didn't file the paperwork, so they "lost" my KL for half a day.

When they found it and finally got to looking at it, the realized that when they replaced the PTU they blew a fuse, so its been overheating for a month. They replaced the fuse and a connection box and things seem back to normal.

And by normal, I mean I expect to take it back in for some random reason by mid-FEB.

If you get the PTU replaced, make sure they do it correctly.
