8th gear at 54 mph---is this normal?

I noticed today that my 2017 Th v-6 goes into 8th gear at between 52 and 55 mph on a flat surface road. It is still in 8th at about 74 mph and I didn't go any higher as I don't like the idea of a ticket for testing my TH. The rpm at about 55 mph was about 1300 rpm. The transmission is doing great--hardly even tell it is shifting unless I am watching it like I was today, I know this is old stuff and a lot of threads, but maybe I was sleeping before as I never noticed any of my other KLs going into 8th gear at between 52 to 55 mph. No, complaints, just enjoyed the 70 mile drive today in the sunshine here in SC.

Operating as intended. Mine (2015) is similar. Computer will allow roughly 1300rpm with the V6, but not lower. 1300-1500rpm is the mpg sweet spot.
9th with the V6 is only seen starting at roughly 75mph and above, either going downhill, with a strong tailwind or drafting.

i wish mine shifted into 8th that quick! with the roof basket, light bar, and lift, it doesn't like high gears at all anymore, and i get between 15-17 mpg.

Wow--I am surprised it is making that much of a difference. I usually accelerate pretty fast at every stop and go (when I hit a red light and first in line) and I had a lot of them today when I was in Greenville and my computer still said I was getting about 20.7 today which is good for me. (computer was only about three tenths of a mile off from actual check with use of gas last time I checked.)

My 2017 Limited v6 goes into 8th gear at a lower speed than my 2014 ever did, something I commented on recently.

And let's not forget that the factory Tow Group, with its shorter final drive ratio, allows getting into a higher gear at slightly slower speeds (a few mph). Depending on driving speed, this can even prove to be an advantage for fuel economy, as surprising as it may sound to some.

How are you guys/gals determining what gear you are in? Are you just feeling the shift, or watching the tach? If I push my shifter to the left, it will stay in a gear until I move the shift lever. Is there a way around this?

Moving the shifter over momentarily will show you what gear you're in. That's how people are determining it.

With time, I can tell now just by looking at the RPM vs speed. But the only way to tell for sure is to move the shifter over briefly and see the current gear. I don't leave it there, because doing so prevents upshifting. So just a quick look.

The 2016 and 2017 shifter can be pushed to the left and then either pull back(can remember) or push forward till it shows 9th gear. And then it will show what gear you are in while driving as you will seldom hit 9th gear. The 9th gear is a smaller number besides showing the actual gear you are in at the time. Of course when you have to go in reverse you have to move the shifter back to the normal location and then when going forward re-do the procedure. It is really nice to be able to see when the gears are shifting. I didn't explain this too well, but someone will hopefully make it more clearly. (lwhen you put it in 9th gear as the highest gear it will go too--this doesn't prevent it from shifting from 1st to 9th gear and letting you see it shift)
