ZF nine speed has me spoiled and in a pickle now

Wife is wanting a new car. She really likes our 15 Cherokee that I drive, but doesn't want a second one. She wants something different and is pretty open and not completely set on what it needs to be. The problem is that she depends on me to make the call on mechanical specs of prospective candidates. And here lies the problem - Just not enough choices that have this transmission as a choice and I'm completely spoiled by it. Just never had anything so smooth and efficient in my life. Anything we try that doesn't have this transmission feels clunky. Looks like she may end up with a new Pacifica.

pretty much everything that's been redesigned or refreshed in the last 5 years with FCA uses a transmission over 6 speeds (with the exception of the journey). what about a grand cherokee? or a Durango? they both use the 8 speed, which is very smooth, and actually attains top gear on the regular (i'm almost exclusively in 8th gear in my charger on the way to work every day).

other than transmission, what are her wants/needs in a car, both basic and specifically?

Have you driven a GC with the 8 spd? It's the smoothest, most responsive in the FCA line in my opinion. No durability issues, as I have had them last 300k. Plus, you get a top gear you can actually use on a normal freeway commute.

If she wants something a little smaller hold off for the new Commander, slightly larger a Grand Cherokee

I find this puzzling. I've had two Cherokees, a '14 Trailhawk that the dealer let me swap for a '15 Limited because it was so prone to trouble. With both Cherokees I've found the transmissions to be uneven, rough, and prone to hesitation. I back it out of the garage, put it in drive and sometimes nothing happens but an engine roar until it grabs 3-4 seconds later. And on numerous occasions I've had it stall when I was trying to dash into traffic which can be dangerous. I have all the updates.

The ZF Nine speed is the ONLY reason I'm hesitant to buy another Cherokee or the new Compass.

Are the transmissions so variable in these cars that the two of us could have such different experiences?

the zf 8 speed in the mopar rwd platforms is considerably better than the zf 9 speed.

so something like a durango or grand cherokee?

The 8 speed just seems like its in the right gear more often. if that makes sense.

Not that the 9 speed is terrible.. but its not nearly as good as the 8 speed.

Does the pacafica feel overly big to you. We have driven Chrysler brand minivans since 1991 and have a 2005 town and country now. It's my toy airplane hauler. Wife's current is Chrysler 200 - she wants something taller and with better headlights (the low beams on 200 cut off sharply on top and if you are driving in even slightly hilly terrain you can't see far at all a lot of the time - high beams are fine, but can't be used so much because of traffic). Both of these dislikes she likes about the Cherokee but as I said, she doesn't want two of the same thing around. Prior to the 200 she has driven minivans since 1991 though. It just seemed to me that the Pacifica felt a lot bigger in comparison to the earlier town and country configuration. We tried a 2016 town and country, but transmission was bad experience compared to the 9 speed. I thought it had 8 speed, but not sure.
