Probably valve body.

It directs hydraulic fluid to valves that activate the appropriate clutch packs, dog clutches, or band servos to shift gears.

I think thats it. Thanks. Couldn't remember the Exact name. Is this kind of repair going to bite me in the ass later on?

If this repair requires taking the transmission down to internal parts, I am surprised they are allowing the dealer to do that now. I am not a tech and not sure where the valve body would located in the complete transmission. IR Smart should know or can find out what the service departments are now doing with repairs on the 9 speed transmission. Anyhow, hope you get it repaired to your satisfaction.

If and when you get it back, ask for ride along before taking it from the dealership.

If you feel it is still acting like it was before, I would raise h e double hockey sticks and tell them to go back and fix it. That mileage you quoted previously is terrible and shouldn't happen even with weight and the rack.

He said its an internal part. He seemed surprised hinself. Chrysler engineering directed them to do this then re-test.

I told him I want pictures of the inside. Not sure if I'll actually get them.

Removing the valve body does not require digging too far into the transmission. Here's a video of the process from 3:09 to 4:35 ....
.

On your earlier post where you mentioned the dealer might have referred to a plate, there is an air test plate adapter that can be bolted on where the valve body was. Then air pressure can be applied to various ports on the plate to pressurize each of the clutch apply circuits. It the tests fail, the transmission will need to be replaced. Otherwise the valve body or solenoid valves might be defective and will be replaced.

There is a Dog Clutch that shifts for 3rd and it has to match revs to sift correctly and if the valving is having an error then in might get stuck in third. If it was having issues before it froze that might be the reason for the bad mileage. make sure it works right when you get it. They might say that it has a self learning process, this is true but no worse than if you got it of the lot new. If it is jerky or weird then tell then to fix it again.

Other than the mpg, the car was mostly pretty smooth. I figured that someone at FCA was just guilty of printing bullpuckey on the window sticker for i4 trailhawks. It wouldn't be the first time a company played with mpg ratings. I understand the government here in US doesn't test the numbers provided by the mfg unless they suspect something.

Jeep is telling them to replace it and retest.

Should I be ok with that or raise **** for a new transmission?

They must have a transmission tech on staff that can tear it apart.
They use to just replace the entire transmission regardless, if the issue was internal from what I understand.
But it sounds that they are not 100% sure that's the problem they told you.
The problem is that one part's failure could be caused by a failure or misalignment elsewhere.
Again it just may be a simple fix as was the snap ring that FCA allowed early on to be done at the dealer.
If that fix does not work then total replacement is in the cards.
